What should I do with my App?

I have an iOS App that has about 1600 downloads, 7500 sessions and brings around $100 in sales per month (it's free with in-app purchases). I did build it for about 4 years ago (in total stats are 76k downloads and $2k in sales, the last update was installed on 33k devices) after Apple announced Swift. I was kind of proud of it as it did appear on one of the slides during Apple's Keynote. But since then I did lose a passion to work on it. It's a super small App and I can't see the future for it. It's also not worth killing it as it has no back end and doesn't need the support.

Have you been in a situation where you don't see the future of your product and have no more willing to work on it but was afraid if you would stop then it would stagnate and you would lose some opportunity? Any ideas what I should do?

    I suggest:
1.) Explore why you originally wrote it and figure out if any of the original motivation is there.
2.) Talk to users and look at how it's improving their lives and/or what they wish it could do.
3.) Look at competitors and see if there's anything there that inspires a feature idea.
4.) Rewrite/update it in a language programming language you want to learn.
5.) Spend some time marketing it and see if you can grow the usage to make 100% of your income passive from this app.

The last option is to see it as there's clearly something viable and something that is generating income.

    Hope that helps,

      Thank you for your advice!
You are probably right and I have to ask users what they want. Will just have to figure out how can I reach them. :) Probably, some questionnaire in the App.
Competitors is one of the reasons why I don’t have a passion anymore when I look on all those great Apps there and realise how much work it would take for me to be there. I don’t even understand why some people are using my small App instead of the (much better) ones with the reach functionality.
In the worst case I’ll probably have to sell it.

Hi @strelec! I'm still growing my apps, but something that has given lots of good feedback from users & opened several dialogues with them is adding a simple link in the Settings section of my app to a general feedback Google Form that I track in a Google Sheet & reach out to people if they leave their email. Could be a nice low effort tactic to see if people want to share their feedback & ideas for improvements.

If you have other more interesting projects and source of incomes, then you should probably think about selling this app (I assume, you own the source code).
Btw, as an Android developer, I am interested, why you only have an iOS version? Is it because there are more competitors in Play store or you are not familiar with Android development or any other reason?

      Thanks for the advice!
The only reason is that I’m an iOS developer. I was thinking about making an Android app to learn Kotlin, but I’m always coming up with new ideas and it’s much easier for me to implement them in iOS.

Thanks! I might try to do that. Do you know maybe how to calculate the price of an App? Is it purely based on the revenue or amount of active users?

      1. 2

Short answer is purely based on the profit around 2 - 5x profit
So assuming $100 is after Apple's cut and no other expenses, the back of the envelop valuation would be $2.4 - $6k

From the buyer's perspective, it's about how much future cash it can generate whether it's through the app directly or by selling it to another buyer.

If you have tons of users, the new owner could figure out a way to sell other products/services to the user base.

If your looking to sell I’d potentially be interested. Things I look for are active users, revenue (if any), codebase, and potential profit 2-5yrs down the line.
