What to do when you miss a week of your newsletter?

I just launched Crafted and promised my readers that I'd deliver content every week. I'm already struggling to keep up this rhythm.

Last week I just didn't have enough time to produce original content. I didn't have anything to send out.

What do you do in this situation? I see several options:

  • Don't send anything and hope your readers don't notice (or just don't care)
  • Send a small email to say you haven't forgotten, get them ready for next week
  • Something else? Guest content? Link to another newsletter?

I opted to send a short email explaining that life got busy and I didn't have content this week. I made sure to point to next week, where I already have my content lined-up. I also reminded them that's its still my goal to send content weekly, but sometimes it just doesn't happen.

I found it hard to strike a balance between being apologetic and not sounding like I messed up. In truth, sometimes you just need a week off - and I wanted my readers to understand that too.

Do nothing, let the worry go away, then focus on writing something good for next week.

      Agreed with Rosie.

Look forward to the next issue. Create good content and value in the next one.

I think you did the right thing. Nothing wrong with adding a link or two that you’ve found or a few sentences as taster for what you’re working on that isn’t finished. Keep the cadence going.

I do occasionally take a planned break and give the subscribers a heads up (eg taking a summer vacation or over Christmas)

Difficult to know - but yea @pauldmet I think especially at the beginning in launching the newsletter consistency is important. Even if its a small something with a few links, I think it shows the readers that you're serious and reminds them you exist.

I think it's totally okay to miss or take a break. We're all human.

I would make a funny joke in your next newsletter to entertain your readers.

Yes thanks @jkristobans - I think I might need to change the rhythm to bi-weekly newsletters. I suppose its always better to promise less and deliver more.
