What tools to organize a remote team?

Hi ! I'm currently working on a pet project and I'd love to onboard people from around the world. But I need a bit of organisation around the project, like organising tasks in different dashboards and stuff.

I tried Notion on another project, but I will not pay for it if I can find something that matches its quality. I also tried Trello. But it's a bit light. I wish to do a bit more.

Also, what tool to communicate ? Whatsapp ? Slack ? Mattermost ? Others ?
