What's your typical day look like?

I've always been one of those people that likes to create stuff in my spare time but as I get older, life gets more complicated. Finding a routine that works is a challenge and I thought it would be useful to share how I do it.

I've been working from home since March due to COVID and tbh it has thrown old routine out of wack quite a bit. I found myself getting more distracted by YouTube, picking up bad habits like drinking and staying up way too late then repeating the cycle over and over.

I'm only just now starting to get back to being productive and a big part of that is getting my routine back in order. A typical day for me goes something like this:

  • 7am - Woken up by the kids or the dog licking my face
  • 8am - Drop the kids off at school
  • 8:30am - 12pm - Focus on my day job
  • 12pm - 1pm - Eat lunch and plan / think about what I'm going to do that night
  • 1pm - 3pm - Back to the day job
  • 3pm - Kids get home from school, lots of activity around the house
  • 5pm - 7pm - Dinner, showers, exercise, kids bedtime, etc.
  • 7:30pm - 8:30pm - Watch some Netflix with my older son.
  • 8:30pm - 11:30pm - Work on my side projects
  • 11:30 - 12am - Teeth, dishwasher, trying to fall asleep.

As you can imagine, those 3 hours after all the kids are in bed I need to be effective or I get nothing productive done. The trick that works for me is knowing what I'm going to do before I sit down at the computer.

The downside, is sometimes I'm too tired to be effective. That's why it's so important to look after my health. The bad habits that creep in can be a real productivity killer.
