    Thanks for the thread @Mirv!

I'm hacking on AllyBot.io at the moment. It's getting there, very slowly. So far my distribution strategy has been cold outreach on LinkedIn (and a few cold emails), Slack App Directory, and replying to folks on Twitter.

One approach I'm trying is giving AllyBot to public/education communities for free in a "trojan horse" style approach. Hopefully, when folks see AllyBot being used, they might consider bringing it to their employer. Got my first install into a big (2k+ members) Slack yesterday, so I'll report back with progress!

this is a great idea! We are also thinking of giving inkrement away to certain communities or non-profits and in return ask if they can backlink to us in their website. I am hoping the backlink can help our SEO.

Hey there, glad to see this thread! My name is Nitish and I, along with our team of 4, am building a Slack app, 360Katas (www.360katas.com) to seek voluntary feedback and work on personal goals based on it. We are pre-revenue are currently free for all!

great thread! I'm building a remote team bot

    • what techniques are people using to get the word out and get installs?
    • what payment methods for subscription models?
    • has anyone had success with MS teams for porting their bots?

      For AllyBot.io:

      • giving it away for free to public/education communities. I think this strategy will serve me well but only time will tell.
      • Stripe, tiered, flat rate pricing
      • I've had a look at Teams docs and it wouldn't be toooo hard to, although haven't done this myself

I built https://slashegg.com last year and am still surprised that people actually use it. More recently have been building https://grapiture.com but this currently works with webhooks, while I build out the app.

Well, it was a couple of years ago, but we built a Slack bot for our HR app that does natural language parsing to answer questions like "Who is out of the office today" and "When will Sally be back from holidays" or "How much sick leave does John Smith have?" etc. Seems to be used a fair bit by our customers, but we haven't updated it in a while.

I built a Slack integration for Noora (noorahq.com). Happy to help if anyone has any questions. We'll probably revisit the integration in the near future to make it more feature rich (at the moment it is just a notifications stream).

I've always liked the idea of making a slack app. But can never think of a good idea. I use slack, but the only app I use is the reminder =P

I get my ideas from my company and the little hacks people build into slack, like a bot to automatically create JIRA tickets for devs, or a bot to give kudos/high fives to other team mates. If people inside the organization are creating these workflows/hacks, then its probably a problem that many people face.. well atleast i hope so lol

I'm considering to build Slack app/ plug-ins - any suggestions how should I learn? @Mirv

    1. 2

👋 @felix12777 - When it comes to slack apps, theres a couple of different ways to go about building them, and it depends on your use case.

Generally for all cases, you'll need to be familiar with how to write HTTP Webservers that loosely follow REST guidelines. From webhooks to interactions with your app, all the data generally comes over http/rest. Are you familiar with how do this and now looking for how to write webservers for slack apps or are you also looking to learn how to write and deploy http servers? I can provide some links/help accordingly

Hey @felix12777, hit me up directly if you have any questions! I'm going to be blogging more about my Slack app journey for AllyBot.io and UPPIT.io - Slack apps are fun!

I'm building an integration where my app will post to a designated Slack channel of your choice. Is that considered a Slack bot?

  11. 1

Thanks @Mirv. Slack app directory isn't doing much for me. You guys?

    1. 2

      @ErwinAI
I noticed in your milestones that your app was featured under Brilliant bots for 14 days. Did that have a significant impact on traffic from the app directory? Do you know what factors led to you being featured on the app directory?

    2. 2

I spoke to another slack app developer and he mentioned to me that the best way to get traffic from Slack app is to be featured on the App Directory. He was randomly emailed one day by the app directory that he was going to be featured so he didn't know HOW to get featured, but once he got featured, he got about 100 downloads a day for a couple weeks.

Nope, but haven't given it much attention myself as well.
