I actually just filled out a Trust Radius review for Toggl, so this is fresh on my mind.
There are actually a few reasons my team and I use time tracking (Toggl):
Productivity: I want to make sure we're spending our time wisely among all our projects and tasks. When you know you're on a timer, you tend to work more time-conciously.
Payroll: Some of my staff is paid hourly, and this allows me to pay them for their time (Toggl's reports feature is very easy to use).
Personal health: I don't enforce this with my team, but I personally work from a Pomodoro method. 20min intervals with a 1-3min break in between. I decided to do this after years of back pain, eye-fatigue, and headaches. Then an optometrist told me that you shouldn't look at a computer screen for longer than 20mins at a time. She suggested I do the 20/20/20 rule: Every 20min get up and rest your eyes on something 20ft. away for at least 20sec.. Once I started doing this my eye-fatigue and headaches practically disappeared. My energy was higher at the end of a full day. And my back pain (from sitting too long) was gone.
So yea... time tracking is pretty much a necessity for my team and I.
