Why include video in your podcast?

Including video in your podcast is really powerful when promoting your podcast on social media (Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn).

One full episode can give you 10 extra pieces of content. And sharing an interesting short video clip from your latest episode will be way more engaging than just an audiogram. I scroll past so many audiograms daily but pretty much always stop for a short video clip with an interesting headline.

One crucial thing to realize is that social media (in general) is way more optimized for video than audio. The majority of people have all the videos in their feed on autoplay. Keep in mind that they're muted by default so make sure to include subtitles.

Don't underestimate the effect video has on the human brain. If you found yourself frustrated and hitting the plateau in terms of numbers, this might be your way of progressing. Think about the quality as well though, seeing facial expressions is amazing but not if you can't tell which pixel is what.

P.S. I'm using two cheap and simple tools to help me with all this. Links below.

Hope this was informative! :)

oh, also, check out this thread https://www.indiehackers.com/post/ask-podcasters-whats-your-go-to-transcription-software-cc456bf64e?commentId=-MbcLpTXhxiPeqR0JLIx and specifically @LouTromans who is building a transcription tool - essential for repurposing audio/video content.

Just listened to this episode of Bold Perspectives featuring @sometimescasey that talks a bit about repurposing content across channels, starting with video. It's a good listen (It's also part 3 of a 3-part series, so if you like the sound of it, be sure to check out the previous 2 eps.) https://samanthapostman.com/creative-vision-and-connecting-podcast-creators-with-casey-juanxi-li-part-3-of-3/

As with audio-only podcasting, I wouldn't be too worried about the recording element of adding video. If you just want to screen-capture your interviews and are happy with that as a result, that's fine. The devil lies in the additional overhead for me, like any potential editing, preparing social media clips, etc. If you can afford to, I'd definitely recommend outsourcing those elements as they can very quickly suck up too much of your time you could be spending setting up and having new exciting conversations. Sure, outsourcing comes with its own overhead, but mostly during the initial setup. https://www.upwork.com/ is a good place to get started. Hope that helps. ;)

Haha so Samantha and I actually had Zoom video and I forgot to hit the record screen button. It is definitely one more piece to be anxious about - it's not a costless addition to the recording process. Plus folks tend to be self conscious and focus on their own video image - I actually turned the self-view off to make myself more at ease.

For turning audio-only podcasts into visual social clips I really like Descript's audiograms: https://help.descript.com/hc/en-us/articles/360042638351-Audiograms

They are super quick to set up and play well on audio-less social media -> example: https://twitter.com/sometimescasey/status/1409307778418712583?s=20

It's just a wasted opportunity not to record video as well when doing podcasts. But yeah, I can understand that some people are a lot shyer on camera... but again... missed opportunity

It's some extra work but worth it if done right.
