Working on an app to build custom databases and tie them to forms

Formonix is an app that allows you to build custom forms to store almost any kind of data. I originally got the idea for it when I was working on an app for a customer. The customer was constantly asking for fields to be added and changed in the different forms in the app. Eventually, I wrote a quick piece to allow them to define these fields without my help.

This lead me to come up with the idea for Formonix ( working title, but I like it so far). Over time, the idea grew from simple forms to include custom views and user-defined tables. The closest comparison I can think of is a web-based Microsoft Access with the goal of letting the average office user quickly and efficiently define the data they want to store and how they want to enter and view this data.

I do not currently have a live version of it to show off, but I did record a short video demonstrating some of its basic features. You can watch that video here:

Formonix Demonstration

I am still early into developing it, but I am at the point where I want to get feedback on it without releasing it. Over the next couple of weeks, I intend to finish up a few parts to get ready to release an early version of it.

It is not feature complete by any means, and the UI is absolutely placeholder, but a few of the ideas I am planning are:

  • Building workflows based on actions & events ( ie. send an email notification when a form is submitted)
  • Embedding the forms on other sites
  • A complete API to integrate it with other apps

I know it is difficult to form an opinion from a video alone, but I would love feedback on the idea and my implementatin of it. Since I know the comparison will come up - I know Airtable and others do a lot of what Formonix will do. I am still working on how to differentiate it.

Thanks for taking a look!
