3,000 Downloads => $0

I've made $0 in revenue from 3,000 downloads because it's a freebie. A free download of 19 Google Sheet Templates to promote Better Sheets on AppSumo.

https://appsumo.com/google-sheets-template-pack/

While the freebie downloads have been rising by the hundreds every few days, the sales of Better Sheets has tapered off.

Lowest sales per day in the past 3 weeks have been in the past 3 days.

I think one reason I'm not seeing direct sales from this is that it's not going to any of my sites and I'm not sure if AppSumo is doing any follow up once downloaded. I'm sure out of 3k people who get templates some of them can afford the $19 purchase of Better Sheets to learn more and get more templates. And not just afford, but intend to.

Thank you for sharing this Andrew. Hustling is tough, and all those "I made £5000 in one day" posts are not helping.

those stories have a similar throughline. 5 years of work.

    That's the thing about appsumo.
Don't do freebies there, unless your product provide "a few month for free" solution and then accustomed users will upgrade to the paid version.

I've done the same mistake with Appsumo.
Our product got download 30k times and only 2 or 3 people bought anything.

I'm not even mentioning the amount of emails with complaints that our product (which usually costs $100) doesn't do everything they wish it should, including curing cancer...

Do Appsumo if you're just kickstarting your biz. Otherwise you might end up dissapointed.

Thanks for sharing your experience as well.

Does AppSumo lets you contact those people's or provide mail ids you can mail to?

    1. 1

No not on the freebie. As of yet.

@AndrewKamphey Hi Andrew, just to help out here with honesty. I bought BetterSheets and also downloaded the free template. But, as a customer, I did not see the immediate connect / need between the two (for me personally). So, may be that's the issue with vast majority (guessing)?!

Aka, I am an average person who found Better Sheets interesting enough to buy, and also downloaded other just because it was "Free". So, may be don't make it free? Probably you are attracting. the incorrect audience for the templates may be?! Btw, I love BetterSheets especially at AppSumo price, JFYI!

Just make the "Twitter Templates" also a paid product and promote separately to the right audience. I suspect the audience for BetterSheets and the Twitter Template are not the same though they look similar. I suspect Twitter Templates are aimed at pros, and giving it for free is hurting overall.

And for BetterSheets (just a guess), it reminds me of Rob Walling's "Start Small, Stay Small Advice" on conversion rate in chapter 2. Since, it's a one time purchase, you have to keep the top of the funnel alive, to keep up with conversions. Ex. if 2 out of 100 buy, then you have to keep getting 100 new prospective customers. Does it add up (curious)?

    This is fascinating.

Do you track sales from other channels?

Have you tried ruling out other sales channel in the past couple of weeks and see if you had any sales from 'unknown' channels?

I don't track since I just look at the partner dashboard on appsumo. 100% of my current sales come from AppSumo
