Discover plant shops on the west coast, US

Do you want to discover trusty places to buy plants 🏪 on the West Coast of the United States 🇺🇸? Visit https://chooseyourplant.com/shops

I've collected a total of 166 plant shops and nurseries that sell indoor houseplants 🌱. All the information, as usual, has been collected manually by me.

I talked to hundreds of people that like indoor houseplants and they have recommended some shops.

The list of 166 shops is the result. I'll keep adding plants for the United States 💪.

Love the website. Looks very professional and well designed. Wishing you the best of luck on it!

How do you plan to monetize the website?

    1. 1

I still have to figure it out. I have many ideas, but there's a big rejection from the B2B part. I thought about a few features users might pay for.

I see you will do a plant related project as well. If you want to share your insights, I could give you some opinions!

Yes, I'm working on a plant website as well. I'm more focused on landscape design tooling and outdoor plants though.

One idea I had for monetizing my own site is simply by displaying ads and offering this as a free service.

        1. 1

Yes... but ads don't pay well. Unless you have a few dozens of thousands of visits. Then, it gives you good money.

          1. 2

True, but I don't see people paying to use a plant website.. especially since this is a hobby and not a necessity. (which is why I thought of ads)

What features do you imagine people would be willing to pay for?

            1. 1

I agree that plants are a hobby, but even in the worse moments, people do have hobbies. On the other side, the plant industry has grown a lot last year, and this one specifically because of COVID.

I was planning on building an app where people can introduce their plants, keep track of them, log stuff, create notifications for watering and fertilizing them, indicate when a plant is sick, keep track of the propagations and stuff.

I don't really know if people would pay for that, to be honest. I know a few people that pay nowadays $10 for that (a simple tracking app that does nothing in special)

              1. 1

This makes sense. I too have read that this hobby has been picking up steam and not surprised that COVID is adding to that pick up.

The app sounds interesting. Are you building chooseyourplant.com to build a community around this first? Wishing you the best of luck!

                1. 1

I'm trying, yes! I see there's a lot of competition in e-commerces and shops that sell plant accessories. What I'm trying to build is a community.

I added some plant info so I get traffic and now I'm building features for the community. Sign up, I'll do a forum I think, meet people around and stuff like this

loved the idea! it's a beautiful platform. How is your SEO doing? Let me know if you need any help, I would love to join your company :) Good Luck!

Thank you so much for the kind words! Right now I'm doing it alone, as a solo founder. I do the programming, social media, marketing, I do some cold emails (not much, only to the shops I added), and I do market and product research as well as the designs and everything.

My SEO is doing fine I think. It could be way better, but for now, It's great! around 8-9k visits/month and growing slower than at first. The project has only been live for 5 month-ish

      1. 2

that's really great! Haven't seen any founder with so many skills. 8-9k visits are more than a satisfactory number if the platform is only 5 months old. You can also plan to scale your platform to make a community around plant lovers. what do you think?

        1. 1

yes, I tried it with slack, but as I guessed... Not all plant lovers are techie. this means that slack increases bounce ratio. I'll have to code my own community in the website.

Well, related to the skills... haha I like to learn all the roles so I can be independent

          1. 2

great! you can just create a community section on your website where people would come to exchange their experience/knowledge/photos of plants, basically, you can try to be a social media for plant lover.

            1. 1

Yes! Right now I'm using slack as something provisional, but I'm sure that signups and having kind of a forum or something like this will have more success
