What are R&D Tax Credits?
R&D Tax Credits are essentially a tax relief incentive from the government to catalyse innovation in UK companies - ultimately boosting the economy.
How much can I get back?
Of the development costs which are considered Research and Development by the governments guidelines, you to get up to 33% of your development costs back - either via a tax credit (cash payment) or a reduction in your tax bill. The company can have made a profit or a loss.
For an SME, depending on the development costs, this is usually between £5,000 and £100,000. The average SME claim in London is £81,000.
How do I know if I'm eligible?
If you have carried out Research & Development as defined by HMRC. This doesn't have to involve finding a cure for baldness or sending people to Mars - it can be as trivial as constructing something in-house that you needed to achieve your technological goal, that wasn't available already (off the shelf or open source).
It can't be art - i.e. it can't be an innovation in UI/UX or design based in any way - this is purely science and tech. It has to have been challenging for a competent professional in the field, and the more documentation you have the better.
How do I make a claim?
You can retrospectively make a claim for accounting periods that end within the last 2 years. A claim involves putting a report together explaining the qualifying R&D alongside figures showing a breakdown of expenditure, and then submitting this to HMRC with your tax return.
You can check out the governments guidance on this here: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/corporation-tax-research-and-development-rd-relief.
It's pretty tough for accountants to advise on because it requires some technical background to even know if you qualify for a claim or not - which is why most people go to specialist agencies. Agencies assess whether you qualify and ask you several questions so that they are able to put a report together. They either provide you the report to give to your accountant to submit, or they submit it themselves.
The problem is, those agencies can takes ages to gather information and submit your claim, and they charge a fortune - agencies fees are typically between 20-30% of the claim value.
