Today is the day where I have reached 500 ⭐ on Github, it is just a number but means alot to me since it represents 500 people who liked css.gg or the idea of using CSS icons or perhaps the project itself.
Thank you very much to everyone 🎉🥂🍾🥳.
Congrats!
I wonder if you have any sponsors by Github...
No I don't have any sponsor on Github, I had only PayPal tho.
:( I see the same - people on Github are not willing to sponsor much :-\ How do you accept PayPal payments? I didn't see any form or button on your site.
Until late I had the paypal link on site and now only on readme I have it like this https://www.paypal.me/astrit
And true perhaps I should share the git sponsor link more rather then waiting from github.
Not sure how Patreon works tho do you have any experience ?
I have never used Patreon, but it's the same principle (almost). People pay you small amount of money for what you already have + links on page or for some exclusive material. For example, see here: https://blog.patreon.com/vue-js-creator-evan-you
Yeah, patreon is good but for the kind of projects like VUE where the get a lot of traffic
I think the size of the project is important for how much you can get out of it, but for yourself perhaps it would be good to have an alternative method for people to support you, especially for those who already have Patreon accounts.
Patreon, unlike Paypal (i think) makes it easier for supporters also to contribute via a subscription model, and you can also mention what rewards they may get to be a Patron (for example: For just $10/month, you will get.mentioned in the README under supporters, etc.) Also $10/month for 1 year is an easier pill to swallow than to transfer you $120 on PayPal.
Just my two cents (:
Awesome! Those icons look amazing! Just starred it (#520)
I see you have a paypal link and a github sponsor link. I'm working on a project to help monetize open source projects like yours.
Basically it's a sponsorship network via the readme. The way it works is
I'd love to get your opinion on this and if you're interested, I'd love to try and make those stars turn into $$.
Awesome icons, congrats
Thank you very much.
And another star from me. Great work!
Thank you much appreciated ✌
This is awesome, congratulations 🎉! Had no clue this existed, will definitely be trying it out in a future project!
Awesome, if you do make sure to share with me will add it on site.
I love the icons, Astrit. Excited to see where this goes!
Thank you very much, a product of passion so I am happy at least from the feedback.
Congrats ✨
Thanks 🙌🎉🥳
Wow!! I was looking for such kind of library since so many times. Thank you
I am glad you found it, if you need help let me know.
Sizing is done with only variable. --ggs remember that.
how did you promote this..curious to know?
Product Hunt was first post, dev.to/astrit was the second post where I explained everything on how I got started why the project exists and everything and also facebook groups, reddit that's it.
ok cool. Might use these exact steps. Pretty cool library
Star #1421
Wow the stars quickly jumped from 500 to almost 1500 in just 3-4 days!
Yes they did because it is Trending on Github, thanks.
Man that's awesome. Great work. Will share it with friends.
Nice library. Will certainly look to use it. I always lament not seeing weather related icons in standard sets like your. I would be happy to go in a sponsorship to see weather icons or a set that could be used in science / weather (e..g wind speed, directions, clouds, sun etc.).
Congratulations and great work ~
ps. not having scroll was confusing, and like suggested here instead of having a 'pricing' button, just having 'sponsor this OSS' project or something like that would be more informative.
Thank you very much.
Regarding the weather icons it is quite hard to do specially some of them, but if you have any good example that is simple, clean and outlined I am glad to do something about it and add them to the upcoming update of 200 icons.
Regarding scroll and price now both are changed

✌
Congrats the icons looks great, will check them out in the future. Another star from me!
Thank you very much my friend, I appreciate it very much .
Congratulations!! What an awesome library. Love it!
Thank you very much, really appreciate it. ✌🙏
Awesome set man. 👏
Thank you very much 🙏
Congrats! How do you promote it?
Facebook groups, Reddit, IH, Twitter all my channels.
One article on dev.to blew up and from there I got 15k views.
Any chances you could share good examples of your posts on those platforms? Honestly, I ask because want to make my project open-sourced and use github as repo but have no idea how to promote it :)
Sure,
This is the article I wrote the day I published on product hunt
https://dev.to/astrit/css-gg-500-minimalistic-css-only-icons-on-product-hunt-1ihe
This is the product hunt page
https://www.producthunt.com/posts/css-gg
And this is the article that made the difference
https://dev.to/astrit/why-how-did-i-build-500-css-only-icons-library-a-life-story-34on
If this is still not clear hit me up on twitter and I will explain step by step
Do not do what I did and rush to go live.
Awesome project! Very nice icons. Can I also download them as svg?
Thanks, unfortunately not right now but I hope in 1 month this will be done and you will be able to download from a Figma file.
Congratulations, very cool! Just got yourself another ⭐️and I'll share the link! 👍🏼
I appreciate this very much, thank you ✌💙
Congrats on the achievement. So many projects don't even get out of the single digits.
Couple of minor notes...
The wording in the header should be 'entirely built in CSS' and not 'entirely build in CSS'. Also there is no scroll bar in Chrome on Windows desktop.
Thank you for the kind words.
You are absolutely correct "built" as in past - unfortunately english is not my first language.
The scrolling is hidden intentionally but I need to reconsider since you are not the first one to say.
Super idea!
I am a fan of this!
This has a lot of potential. For example animations on hover.
The icons are looking amazing, i guess it took a lot of work to make them look so refined.
Finally something to replace FontAwesome.
gg!
I've used to create shapes for my own site using only css (eg: search icon, menu). Big up!
Thank you very much, that is the exact reason why I started doing this. Fortunately now is possible due to the properties that exists.
I agree that has potential and I will keep expanding.
Currently working on 200 more icons.
Congrats! Great achievment!
Thank you very much.
Congrats! As a fellow oss developer I know how hard it is to get this many stars. Well deserved
Thank you very much, it is beyond imagination I never expected but it was a product of passion and I guess people can guess how many hours I put into it, and also open source so yeah.
you got another star :)
Much appreciated, thanks for the support ✌
Woot woot! good job! 👏
I am glad you like it.
Very interesting project and nicely designed icons!
Wonderful to know ✌
Some comments from a developer:
do not put "pricing" in the menu if it's free. Some people will immediately move far away in the open source community.
Put a "get started" link. I planned to use your stuff but really, I didn't know how. And I still don't know how. This is insane.
"The library in numbers", nobody care, really. You may be proud of that, but you need to target developers, and developers are fast: they want the features, the "get started", the pricing, and the full manual/API. That's it.
The "help menu" is very bad. First item is: "why should I use CSS.gg". But I don't care! I need help, not commercial stuff !
I agree 100% it was part of changes and on upcoming update will remove it completely and just add link to sponsors.
I added on FAQ explanation but I guess that Is a must and I will do it. So for now please go to css.gg/faq or directly on github readme is all explained. Or if you like get in touch with me on twitter.com/astritmalsija and will help you, but I get the idea that needs to be more clear.
Totally agree, it was perhaps a catchy phrase for the start and now I am working on 200 more so I can't keep calling them 700 CSS Icons.
Will try to improve that and keep it more technical.
I appreciate very much your feedback, noted all of these and hopefully will do them ASAP.
Have a great time ✌
And why you call the list of icons, in the menu, "APP"? Just call it "icons", or "our icons", straight to the point.
It will be called icons on the new update since I will be adding CSS backgrounds and more elements and not just icons.
Thank you very much I am glad you guys found it.
