May 15, 2021 Hacking Google Trends for Machine Learning

Google Trends has been used and abused since 2004. It's a powerful, half-baked tool provided by Google which provides search result trends. Given the recent surge of altcoins, such as Dogecoin, we wanted to be able to predict the next altcoin price rally.

Easy? No problem? Not quite.

Google Trends only gives a number between 0 and 100 and historical data completely changes when it hits a new peak of searches. This makes it really difficult to train a machine learning model. It also explains why nobody uses Google Trends for predicting cryptos, stock prices or frankly anything.

After many double espressos, IP blockages and endless hours plugging away at code. We've managed to build a correction algorithm for Google Trends, which allows historical data to be consistent with a real time prediction.

May 8, 2021 iOS Vs Android (on design principles)

Building a product with a good user experience is a uniquely difficult task. There are the obvious design/aesthetic considerations but fundamentally you want to build the UI that people will find easiest to use in order to fulfill all of the tasks that they require. One of the core difficulties within this is how much freedom you give the user in how they use the product: do you make the hard decisions for them and risk providing too constrained an environment or do you expose all of the customisation options and risk paralysis by choice/confusion? To use an analogy, I internally think about this as the iOS Vs Android debate. Realistically, this is always going to come down to personal preference but I do think there is one important takeaway I have learned from working on Edgebase. That is to not allow the paralysis of choice to affect your own design process. It is very easy to overshoot initially building things into the UI that will be used by <1% of your users, adding complexity to the product, cluttering the design and also adding support overhead down the line. Focus on just 2 or 3 things on each page/section that are critical and only change as you iterate through your feedback loop process. Allow the market/users to guide you on how they use the platform and adjust accordingly, but never lose sight of the fact that most people just want you to KISS (#teamiOS).

May 2, 2021 Starting a Blog

Building a brand and a following requires commitment to sharing and engaging with the wider community in an honest and open way. People need to feel they can trust and believe in a new product in order to engage with it and (hopefully) become customers. To this effect in the last few days we have spent quite a while exploring what mediums people like to use to connect and share ideas and have decided to both start a blog on our website which we will crosspost to sites such as Hackernews as well as a twitter account so we can share daily updates as to what our models are telling us about the market.

April 9, 2021 Onboarded Beta Users

Feedback is twin bladed knife. On one hand it is clearly invaluable but, on the other, feedback from people who are not/never will be potential customers (or representative of such) can be distracting at best and dangerous to your project at worst. With this in mind I'm happy to announce we have managed to gather a handful of people with many years of experience in traditional (and new-age) trading to beta test Edgebase! While hopefully this is just the start of an exhaustive round of testing and improvement we hope this core of users will be able to provide us a solid foundation on which to build out our product.
