July 15, 2020 July Newsletter

Hi there,

I hope everyone’s doing well in the midst of the pandemic possible recession. We’ve been plugging away on Employbl and have some exciting developments to share :) Since our last update we’ve been writing and bringing more voices to the blog. Below are some posts we’ve published to help people grow their careers, prepare for jobs and find tech companies in the US (especially the Bay Area).

Tech interview prep resources for Software Engineers

Writing: The Software Developer’s Superpower (This one was re-published from the personal blog of my current manager at Phone2Action. We are hiring for a DevOps engineer right now.)

Companies and startups that use Laravel

Venture Capital firms in the Bay Area

In the coming weeks we’re working on giving employers the ability to post their jobs and search and sort through the candidate network of everyone who’s joined Employbl. We’re looking forward to implementing privacy and job hunting tools for candidates in the long run. In the meantime we aggregate US and remote startup jobs on our job listings page.

Cheers 📈

July 8, 2020 Overcoming Phone Anxiety for Your Next Interview
  • Phone interviews are intimidating because talking on the phone is intimidating for everyone

  • Learn the job description inside and out & know the company’s website like the back of your hand

  • Come up with at least one question for your interviewer

  • Make yourself a “script” with points that you know you’ll want to emphasize

  • Answer that call with confidence because YOU GOT THIS.

June 7, 2020 What is an H1B visa?

I recently published a post about the H1B visa. Before I became an agency technical recruiter I really wasn't aware about tech worker visa types or how important they are to the industry as a whole. The FAANG companies (and thousands of others) work very hard to sponsor tens of thousands of tech workers via the H1B visa program each year. The process can be very complicated. In addition to tech companies directly sponsoring people to come work in the USA there are major publicly traded companies like Infosys, Tata Consultancy Services and Cognizant that sponsor people via the H1B visa program. Through this arrangement there are a series of middlemen that profit from tech workers that come here because of the structure of our immigration law. I hope to share more about immigration and work topics via the Employbl blog. If you're not familiar with the H1B visa program start here :)

April 9, 2020 Built candidate approval process

Started from a Google Form now we here. Built a flow where candidates apply, get approved and then can login with Google or LinkedIn to upload their resumes. In the process utilized some swell Laravel 5 features like artisan commands, mailables and eloquent records. Props to Auth0 for building an awesome community and platform 👏🏼

June 25, 2019 Wrote a new blog post on why you should learn SQL

Includes info on what SQL is, what the alternatives are, job titles that use SQL, how different departments at startups use SQL and where you can go to learn SQL

As of this writing there are 893 active jobs on Employbl that contain the word “SQL” at least once in the job description. Employbl pulls in job listings for about 200 companies. That’s an average of four and a half SQL or SQL-related jobs per company!

May 23, 2019 New page for SF companies hiring now

I added job descriptions for the five thousands or so active job listings on Employbl. Listings are all for companies that have at least one physical office in San Francisco Bay Area.

Now candidates can search for jobs by a keyword like "javascript" or "sql" or "digital marketing" or "demand generation".

When searching for jobs I wanted to see all the companies that Employbl has jobs for in one place. Now you can!

Hey IH,

Recently I started playing around with Netlify and Netlify Functions for making websites.

I love Netlify's easy deploy functionality and running Node.js functions in the cloud (ie "serverless")

Has anyone connected to a database with Netlify/Serverless?

I ran into trouble with FaunaDB which they had tutorials on. I'm thinking bout trying Firebase or MongoDB connections next
