Almost all of it is done through direct messaging on Instagram. I reached out to my existing followers and found lots of potential users from specific threads on Reddit (r/Instagram, r/Followback).

Can you please share how you did it? Especially the first 100 or so users.

I personally sent 1,500+ direct messages (to date) on Instagram to targetted users. I had a decent following at the start so I reached out to a bunch of mutuals who might be interested in this.

That's a lot. How many replied? Did you do this through the mobile application?

The open & response rate of direct messages I sent is well above 70%.
My first 100 users were mostly mutual followers that I've followed for and engaged with (their posts) for a long time.
And yes, I do this through the Instagram app. It's much harder on a desktop.
