Gmail Automation for Geeks
Sending emails to users of my apps was tedious, so I automated it. Then I thought others might want to improve their process as well.
What's the point of releasing your app in two weeks, if you then have to wait 6 weeks for Google to approve it - maybe?
From https://support.google.com/cloud/answer/9110914:
"First, your application will be reviewed for compliance with the Google API Services: User Data Policy. Thereafter, you will have the remainder of 2019 to demonstrate compliance with the secure handling requirements. Assessments will be conducted by a Google-designated third party assessor, may cost between $15,000 and $75,000 (or more) depending on the complexity of the application, and will be payable by the developer. This fee may be required whether or not your app passes the assessment. We expect that fees will include a remediation assessment if needed. If your app has previously completed an adequate security assessment as determined by the assessor, you will be able to provide a letter of assessment that may reduce the scope of the review."
Fingers crossed that it doesn't come to that!
My app remains unapproved, meaning that a big scary warning message is shown every time a user wants to sign in. Google says the approval process can take up to 6 weeks. Even though the app is very useful to myself I'm reluctant to release it to the world in that state.
I'm also waiting for Gmail's Scheduled Send functionality to become available via the API. Once it's there I'll add it to GeekMail. A ticket is open: https://issuetracker.google.com/issues/77503702 - I just hope it's not one of those tickets that remain open for years...
Having gathered some feedback from friends, I'm releasing GeekMail for the world to see. It's free while in beta.
I use https://geekmail.app in all my apps, including GeekMail itself.
As a solopreneur I need to make sure that my users are happy, so I reach out to each and every one them via email. As you can imagine, that can get tedious pretty quickly.
I wanted to automate the process, but didn't want to lose the human factor. Automatically creating Gmail drafts while manually checking user data before pressing 'Send' seemed like the perfect solution.
And so I got to work...
After I was satisfied with the result I thought others might benefit from my work as well. That day, GeekMail was born.
