It was Monday morning, early. I was on my morning run. I had just read another article on IH about open source developers like myself getting sponsored for their work.
They had a problem. "GitHub, npm, packagist and others don’t provide the tools to make money with open source. It’s up to us build that infrastructure, for example to give sponsors access to exclusive content."
This is a story I've heard before. It's a problem I've had myself. I'd like to offer video content, private files, and repo access to people who sponsor, but there's no way to do it natively.
Immediately I started asking around to see if other developer friends had this problem. I found some interesting annecdotes. People building ad-hoc tools to solve this. I dug deep into existing solutions and they came up lacking. It was time to get working on ghperks.com.
