December 2, 2020 I'm closing. Why is it not a failure?

After 5 months of trying, 3 pivots, and a huge effort in what was my main project (not a side one), I decided to close it.

In a mission to help others fight the failure mindset and work on having a growth mindset, I'm sharing why I don't think it was a failure focusing on the positive outcomes I get from this amazing experience:

  • I've helped more than 70 entrepreneurs on the way (+300 hours of calls).
  • I've understood better the problem and figured out a better solution for the same problem: startupbuilder.mba
  • Met great people + learned with them. Done business with some of them.
  • Met the co-creator of the Chasm Framework (Crossing The Chasm book) and I had the opportunity to work and learn from them.
  • I've increased my brand awareness, exposed my brand more and built more audience.
  • I've made lot's of friends on Twitter (and audience).
  • Learned the maker and indihacker movement.
  • Learned how to pivot quicker, better and how to validate faster, better.

The future looks amazing. The past was too.

So, How do I embrace "failure"?

I just think there is no failure involved, as that is a self-imposed reality that hurts our growth.

I focus on all the gains I've experienced in the way that drive learnings to be a better professional and human being. Thus GROWTH.

Thank you much for reading me. I'll keep around here to help IndieHackers validate their ideas, and keep doing awareness about growth mindset and other important underrated topics that matter to be a good leader.

October 1, 2020 First 3-months mastermind membership sold

It's been 1 week since we changed our pricing, membership models and partner with joinsecret.com to offer their premium deals included in some of our memberships.

This morning we've got our 1st customer for a 3 month commitment with our mastermind club. Huge news that encourage me to keep pushing, learning and improving.

October 1, 2020 5 viewers in our first livestream

Yesterday we had our very first livestream "Audience Building For Founders" as part of our double goal: give away free resources for founders + increase awarness and interest towards GrowthSeeker.

Here some stats from the session:

  • Maxium viewers 2
  • Average viewers 5
  • Unique users in the web growth 0%

Post session stats:

  • 123 replay views
  • 4h24h minutes of time watched

Poor results but I don't give up. This is about repetition and consistency, at the time than delivering value to the audience.

Here some learnings about the livestream https://twitter.com/josberco/status/1311366680983998465?s=21

September 28, 2020 1st partnership with deals for our members

As a part of our product and marketing strategy, we're working in partnerships to strengthen our offering and acquisition channels.

In this case, we've just closed a partnership with JoinSecret, the #1 Perks Platform For Founders.

Now included in the growthseeker.io 3 months Mastermind Club and yearly community membership, members gain access to more than $50K in 120+ tools and cloud services.

This is an important milestone because it is the very first partnership we close. In this case, it is going to be highly beneficial for our community members.

I expect this partnership to increase the willingness to pay and the member acquisition rate. Let's see how it works!

September 8, 2020 First paid member!

After two Value proposition pivots since May, and two months testing our mastermind calls, we've improved our community experience building a new forum on top of circle.so and using whereby.com for our mastermind founder club experience. With these improvements, commonly claimed by our early-adopters, we thought it was time for the next validation test: monetizing.

Right after we built the new community and changed the value prop, I sent an email to our subscribers base and converted our first paid customer for our Mastermind Club. That was on Sunday. As per today, we've three paid customers for the Mastermind Calls, 2 of them never before joined the calls.

I'm really excited that this happened. However, more than celebrating, this produces an enormous sense of responsibility and commitment to keep working hard and humbly to deliver the expected value for our members.

Next steps:

  • Talk and support A LOT our new members to know how to provide them all the value they expect from our young community and avoid churn.
  • Improve the onboarding process and guides.
  • Keep growing our knowledge base resources.
  • Keep sharing free resources here at IH and twitter.
  • Keep growing our mailing list at growthtips.growthseeker.io with our growth tips. One of our paid customers came from this list.
  • Record sessions and upload them to the free resources so the visitors can know what to expect from the sessions in advance.
  • Test to stream a session through twitter.
  • And a bunch of customer acquisition work more!
July 26, 2020 We're becoming a virtual co-working space

After three weeks of coffee and tips calls, we have experienced a steady growth of founders joining our community, with 30 founders joining our calls during these weeks.

What is exciting and an important milestone is to open our community app a Sunday and see 3 members hanging out and learning together without an "official call schedule". They just meet each other and are leveraging our rooms to hang-out.

This is exciting because GrowthSeeker was born to be one of the first virtual incubators for the post-COVID world. An essential experience in an incubator is to learn with other founders in a co-working space. We are trying to build a "virtual co-working" space to simulate this experience with free use live rooms, group chats, and actively introducing members that can help each other to dynamize the networking.

I'm so thankful to the members leveraging this space and making GrowthSeeker a community to come by and hang out every day to learn together with other founders LIVE.

July 24, 2020 A member wants to become the first paid member!

After Friday's coffee and growth tips call, a new member joining the call for the first time told me that he wanted to become the first paid member. That was super exciting to hear. Not because somebody wants to pay, but because having the feedback and understanding that we are delivering enough value to become a paid service. Other members told me in feedback sessions that they would pay for the "coffee and growth tips" calls, but this was the first time that somebody was proactively asking us to be the first paid member.

We'll keep having the free calls during the next weeks while building our revenue model, automating the subscription, improving the onboarding, and the community experience.

July 17, 2020 Our daily tips calls work so far. +15 founders!

After the second week of the initiative of having daily calls "coffee and growth tips" to help indie founders and makers, we've been experimenting great (at least for me was unexpected) growth. Here are the numbers:

‪👥 70 users joined the community‬ (+45)
‪💬 I sent a DM to each of the new 45 users welcoming and offering my help‬
‪🥳 15 answered my DM‬s
‪💡 17 founders joined the live calls‬ (+15)
✅ 5 positive reviews on Twitter!‬ (I love this!!!)

A critical factor to make this happen has been the reduction of frictions to join the community group on the landing page and in the links to the event. There is no need to sign-in for the user to enter the server. However, this is against growing a list of emails and being able to follow-up and grow in the long term. Anyway, it is what I wanted to test, and so far is working for the short-term. The idea is to have a minimum cohort in the community to keep them engaged and participating so that we don't seem a "lonely community," start growing networking and helping each other.
Most importantly, talk with these early-adopters to understand what they value the calls and content to keep improving the "product". After we have 20 actively engaged members, we'll add again the need for sign-in to join the community. In the meantime, I'm researching what is most valuable for the members to monetize the community.

I'm eager to see what happens next week regarding engagement and churn: Will the same fo‪unders come again for the call? Why? I'll keep you posted!

July 10, 2020 1 week = 25 users = 3 members = 1 review

We launched an initiative to help founders and makers ‪giving 100 hours of growth tips during July with 4 mentors. After the 1st week here are the numbers:‬

‪👥 25 users joined the community‬
‪💬 I sent a DM to each of the 25 users welcoming and offering my help‬
‪🥳 9 answered my DM‬
‪💡 3 founders joined the live calls‬
‪🙌 1 presented himself to the community‬
‪✅ 1 positive review on Twitter!‬

Most of users come and leave. I think they don't even spend the time to take a look and join the room to see if they can find value.

It's my first experience building a community, and I'm learning the hard way 😅

We'll keep consistently sharing tips, tools & being available for founders and makers in our "coffee and growth tips" calls during July & August. At the same time, I'll keep exploring the problems of the founders+makers community to try to accelerate the product-market fit journey with new solutions.
