5 Million Podcast Downloads

Courtland Allen @csallen

Episode #128 with Tyler King broke the 5M cumulative download mark for the IH podcast today, which is fitting, because Tyler's episode was one of the best I've recorded in a while!

The IH podcast has been going strong since mid-February 2017. I never imagined it would get more than a few hundred downloads a day, and now it's averaging over 10,000:

Whenever I analyze the podcast and what makes it grow, the two things that always stand out are quality and consistency. The podcast does well when I'm regularly putting out great episodes, and it stagnates when I'm inconsistent or the episodes are mediocre.

Shocking, I know.

My plan at this point is to keep the podcast going exactly the same way it has been for the past few months, where I'm spending lots of time trying to hunt down good guests and ask them solid questions, and I'm releasing an additional "quick chat" episode every Friday.

It's been super fun to invite guests on who've been posting top milestones, and I'm looking forward to the day where I can find 100% of my podcast guests from the Indie Hackers community itself. ✌️

Thank you for everything - I learn a lot from the podcasts. I like the questions you ask and how you always dig deeper for insights.

The podcast got me re-interested in indiehackers. I thought the site was pretty cool back when it was just a bunch of interviews, but I love what you've done with it turning it into a social tool. Nice work, y'all.

    Woohoo!
Congratulations @csallen for the milestone and for the insights.

I'm sure the podcast will only improve. 👍👍

It's always the simple, cliche advice that gets the job done. Congrats Courtland!

This is so dope. GG, mate.

Congrats Courtland! I subscribed earlier this month - good tips and I like the intro music . Looking forward to hearing more from you and the rest of the community.

Thanks for all the work you put into the podcast. It made an impact on me while I was finishing up school in 2017 and shaping my career goals - in that way it altered the trajectory of my life 🤓

Really enjoying the quick chats lately.

    Congrats Courtland!

How do you interview without the awkward pauses or transitions that are in so many other interview podcasts?

Or are those just edited out?

    1. 1

I try to edit those out, but I don't feel like there are too many. I also usually have a question in mind before the guest finishes their answer.

I suppose it's not too different than a normal conversation. Doing a video call (as opposed to audio only) makes it a bit more free-flowing. I find it awkward not being able to make eye contact or read facial expressions.

    Congratulations! 🥳

When you work on the next episode can you predict if it will be popular among IndieHackers or not?

    1. 1

I have an inkling before I record, when I'm coming up with questions. Immediately after recording it's hard to have an accurate opinion, as I usually only remember the last few speaking turns. After listening back I usually have a good idea. Sometimes I'm surprised, though.

    Congrats @csallen. You're a great interviewer

Congrats!!! Working hard to eventually be worth interviewing!

Congrats Courtland! Great work. What you’ve created gave me the vocabulary (Indie hacker), for what is I’ve been trying to do for years.

Congrats! When new IH episodes post they jump to the top of my listen list.

    Thanks for the fantastic content.
