Removing the paid plan and unlocking features

TLDR; We are removing the paid plan and unlocking our Pro features for free to everyone.

We've got to the point where we realized that running Mailist in the current monetization model doesn't work. That's why we decided to pivot a bit and get back to the idea we had three years ago.

After asking some of our current users about the paid features, we learned that we are not giving enough value, and therefore we failed to generate the revenue which would cover the maintenance costs!

Did your existing users have really good links they uploaded?

Perhaps you could turn this into a repository of great articles based on topics users are reading? Your users could be curators?

    Just thinking...

Oh yeah, our users use the tool every day and add a lot of bookmarks which they actually read. We haven't dive into any ML analysis of the content but we've considered that in the past.

The feature we are developing will be all about becoming a curator, for your own audience. ;-)

This is a really interesting pivot! Usually, founders do absolutely opposite - they raise their pricing. How, do you think, this can help?

    P.S. Followed you on Twitter.

We are rebuilding the product in a way that original Pro features don't matter that much. We are transforming the tool a bit and we will introduce completely new pricing but at the same time, our Buyer Persona is changing.

We've realized that Mailist, in its current state is and will be a personal tool. In this category it's really hard to monetize unless you provide really unique value. We are too small to compete with other big players in the category (like Pocket, even though we are still winning with our core feature) and reaching the audience of their size would require humongous resources.

Instead, we would like to focus on building the features which will provide more "business" and monetary value to our users.

Hopefully, the big update is coming soon!

      Thanks for your comment :)
