1000 Email Subscribers

My milestones seem to be like London buses. You wait ages and then three come along at once! Just this morning my email list tipped over the 1000 subscriber mark.

I think having a whole page on my site dedicated to getting email subscribers is certainly helping a lot. You might think this is basic, but I'm constantly surprised by how many sites don't have this.

The benefit is that it allows you to link out directly to your email list from other websites.

For example, whenever I post one of my case studies to Reddit or do a Guest Blog, I'll say If you like the article you can join the email list here

Or on my Marketing Examples twitter bio I say, Get one marketing tip a day 👉https://marketingexamples.com/subscribe

This converts much better than just saying, "Oh, if you like the articles, go onto my website, scroll all the way to the bottom and there should be an email box for you there! ..."

I noticed James Clear does the same thing on his twitter actually, directing people straight to his email newsletter instead of his website.

    Having a whole page dedicated to getting subscribers is a smart move. If you want to go even further, that page should be your homepage because it’s almost always the most visited page.

    A lot of pros do it: Backlinko, Detailed, etc.

    And if you want to take your email list growth to the next level, install an exit intent popup. It doesn’t disrupt user experience and it’s very effective (I bet that it will at least double your conversion rate).

      Hi Andrea - I love this. Thanks for sharing. Big fan of those website myself as well. Brian and Glen are legends! Do you know any other big websites which are optimised purely for email.

      I'm thinking of writing a case study about this today actually.

        Basically the ones that sell infoproducts. You won’t find anything on sale on their websites because they sell only to their list and only for a limited period of time to create urgency. So the focus is 100% on growing their email list using lead magnets, content upgrades, etc.

        One website that comes to mind because its owner is doing an AMA here on IH in the next few days is Double Your Freelancing. It uses a free email course as a lead magnet to grow its list.

    That's a great accomplishment in just a couple of month! Do you have some stats on engagement levels from every different platform (people that subscribed from twitter, reddit and so on)?

      I haven't. I shared my top five traffic sources on this post, so perhaps extrapolate from down from that.

      Other than the ones listed on that post, I'd say interviews on other websites( Failory + NoCSDegress), Wes Bos' Podcast, Reddit, Telegram groups, Facebook + Slack groups also aren't bad. Oh and also the YCombinator Startup School Forum is solid

        Thanks Harry, I read the interview on failory.

        I was more interested in the quality of signups. What I mean is that you can create separate email lists for every platform than look at open rates and CTR and see were is most convenient for you to invest energy in promoting. Considering all these websites, it is probably unpractical.

        BTW why not quora?

    Great idea and some excellent discussion in the comments. Subscribed the other day and really enjoy your case studies. You have a very refreshing writing voice btw.

    Are you still thinking of doing one case study a day? I'm considering creating a newsletter and have been mulling over the appropriate frequency. "one tip a day" seems like it has a more exciting call to action than "one tip every fortnight" but I think I'd struggle to keep up the quality without creating like a month's backlog of emails.

      Thanks a lot Simon. Very nice of you. Yeah, so "one tip every day" has sort of turned into one tip whenever i get time to write an article.

      I do think quality is the key. But also yeah, you want that CTA to convert. I'm thinking of dropping down to, "Three quality case studies every week ... " because that's more of what it actually is.

      I think you learn by doing. Get going with it and see where it takes you :)
