Finally No. 1 on Google

Ladies and Gentlemen, the day has come.

alt text

Google has accepted, that when people Google “Marketing Examples”, they don't want a big “knowledge box” full of stocking-fillers from “Marketing Land”. They want the good stuff, the fine wine, the dulcet tones, from Marketing Examples!

In all seriousness, “MarketingExamples . com” is what's known as an exact matching domain name: people search for “marketing examples” organically. And it's also my domain.

Back in the day this was a smart way of getting free organic traffic.

e.g. you could make a domain “highqualitywatches . com” and rank for the valuable search term “high quality watches”. But then Google's algo changed, and it became much harder to “game” the exact matching domain loophole.

In my case, the road to No.1 took about 10 months:

alt text

It came in two stages:

Stage 1 - Get enough high quality backlinks that Google ranks me in the top 5

Stage 2 - Then it's all about “searcher intent”. Whatever search result people are clicking on more than proportionally Google's going to bump up the rankings.

Fortunately, enough people Googling “marketing examples” where searching for my site that Google had to move it up to numero uno.

It's not actually the biggest deal because the keyword “Marketing Examples” hasn't got the biggest search volume.

But now at least I won't have the awkward exchange when I tell people what I do, they Google it, and they can't see it anywhere!

Ok, after this I don't have anything left to teach you about SEO 😂

    1. 3

Haha - tbf you called it pretty much exactly how it happened when we spoke about it.

Also, you told me to not worry so much about this page and that organic traffic was far more important from other pages (which has proved to be very true). Somehow I rank No.1 for “Tesla's marketing strategy.”

  2. 3

How do you got the high quality backlinks?

    1. 1

Create good content and get it in front of the right people, I'd imagine.

    2. 1

I would really like to know this as well!
How do we get high-quality backlinks?

  3. 3

Congrats Harry, the site is great and it deserves to be there!

  4. 2

    This is awesome. Congrats Harry!
460 searches/month for "marketing examples". Not too shabby 😊

    1. 1

Cheers Davis - yeah. I saw that on Ahrefs. I actually think a fair few more judging from “google search console”. I think Ahrefs / uber suggest etc ... always underestimates.

      1. 1

Yeah, Im sure there are a bunch of searches close to "marketing examples" that you also rank well for 😊

  5. 2

Well deserved, man. Great to see your site recognised as the go-to that it is.

    1. 1

      appreciated rennais. thank you

  6. 2

Great project, I follow it since the beginning :) Congrats to your achievement.
Btw, do you do any keyword research for your marketing tips? Where are you looking for inspiration?

    1. 5

my focus is more on organic sharing than organic traffic. So the number one goal is to make the article as good as possible. This means I write about what interests me and don't do too much research.

Having said that keyword research is a big deal. I get nearly 200 visits a day from organic traffic atm and should possibly focus more on SEO style articles

  7. 1

I love your work, the site, twitter account, everything is well done.

  8. 1

    Congratulations, well deserved! ❤

Isn't the page title a bit too simple? I search for "marketing examples", the website is "marketingexamples.com" and title is "Marketing Examples". I am not talking about the SEO effect, but I would expect more information in the title so I know what I'm clicking on, I expected something like "Marketing Examples - A curated list of best marketing campaigns".

    1. 1

good point - just changed :)

  9. 1

Wow! That's quite an achievement Harry. Congrats!! What is your planned strategy to stay at the top position?

  10. 1

Great job mate, well done! I’ve been following your journey for a while and I’m a big fan of your content 👍🏾

  11. 1

    Congrats, that's huge! Whats next?

  12. 1

Great work and kudos to you for choosing a good domain name.

  13. 1

    Congrats man that’s huge!

  14. 1

google recognizes the good stuff 🍷

    1. 1

      haha - it does!

once you hit a threshold of backlinks, it really is all about how people interact with your site ...

  15. 1

    Congratulations Harry! Well deserved!!

  16. 1

    That's a neat milestone you've hit there. Congrats @harrydry

  17. 1

Congrats, dude! That’s a big keyword to own.

    1. 2

Cheers Dave. Not quite as big as you'd think. Hopefully I can spread and take “content marketing examples” etc ...

  18. 1

@harrydry Congrats! I know the feeling of getting #1 on Google for a decent keyword - makes you feel like the top dog :)

Any method you used in particular to get the HQ backlinks other than cold outreach offering guest post/custom advice/etc?

I'm assuming you scraped the backlinks of the top competitors?

    1. 2

cheers lewsis - all very good ideas lewis, but i actually didn't do too much.

I've been open to backlink exchange. I'm in a few seo fb + slack groups and had a few come through there ... And I've wrote a few guest blogs as you said. But nothing more than that.

tbh ... it sounds a bit corny, but i try and let my content do the talking. I'm fortunate that people read my stuff, so I prefer to spend a week writing a sick article and hopefully picking up some good links organically. I think i spent a few days grinding with cold emails and not making much progress.

  19. 1

    Congrats @harrydry! Love your examples!

  20. 1

It’s a good feeling when you rank for something you’ve had to graft for eh? Nice one. Well deserved — we’ve often used stuff from Marketing Examples when looking at strategy at doopoll ✌️✌️✌️

  21. 1

Great product + wonderful achievement. Congrats! Keep up the good work.

  22. 1

Very, very cool, congratulations 🎈 in taking the #1 spot

Website is looking good also 👌🔥

  23. 1

    Good job Harry! 🥳

    1. 1

      Thank you Mr Benoni

  24. 1

    Congrats, well deserved ;)

  25. 1

Congrats @harrydry for this feat. Personally I love your site as well.

Any tips for me? I have a book on Quora Marketing named Quorific. It is now on No 1.

But dont have much searches. Any tips to increase those branded searches??

    1. 2

      Thank you.

Unfortunately, there's not much you can do increase branded searches other than keep grinding and build your own sites brand up. Good search term to rank well for. Good luck :)
