A course designed to increase Medium writer earnings.
When I decided to make a course on Medium writing, my #1 goal was to produce a high quality guide at an affordable price. When I started on Medium a few years ago, there were hardly any resources for new writers.
As I promised in a previous post, I wanted to update everyone on the sales progress of my newly released Medium Writing Course.
I launched the pre-sale of the course on September 25, 2020. I offered the course (which was already extremely reasonably priced, in my opinion) at a 50% discount for all pre-sales.
I wanted to give all of my early supporters a heads up and a chance to get the course at a fantastic price. One person had suggested (probably, correctly) that at least 25 of those same 50+ people would have paid the full price anyway so he suggested not offering the pre-sale discount.
But my sales philosophy in general can really be reduced to a single concept:
Over-Deliver
So I did things my way, and ultimately it turned out great!
The course ended up consisting of a 158 page eBook and 21 video modules on formatting techniques.
As for the actual sales breakdown:
I was hoping for maybe 100 total sales over the course lifetime (~3 years?), so this was a much better start than expected!
It's especially impressive since the only marketing was a Medium post, a newsletter blast, and a post on my Facebook group.
Ultimately I wanted to provide useful and actionable content so I'm excited to see what people think. I did send it to a few people to beta-test and they loved it, but I'll be curious to see how customers paying full price view it.
Thanks everyone on IH for your support!
Both my Medium Course and my Blogging Guide Newsletter have seen an uptick in traffic (about 7%) due to IH (based on analytics).
Feel free to ask any questions!

I've been working on my Medium course for months on and off, and given how many messages I've received in the past, asking for updates on a potential course, I was fairly confident there was at least some demand for one.
And since I love dissecting Medium as a digital publishing platform, I would have created the course even without those messages.
But I wanted to test pre-selling my course for two reasons.
I wanted to gauge the demand for it when users are actually prompted to pay;
To offer the course to my followers at a discounted price as a way of saying thank you for their support.
I have been pleasantly surprised that I have pre-sold 20 copies of my course ahead of its launch!
This was definitely a validation of my concept (that Medium needed an affordable course for writers) and that some of the people who had expressed interest previously, would in fact, make the purchase.
I just launched the discounted pre-order for my upcoming Medium Course.
I decided to offer the course for $19.99 to all pre-orders. The course bundled with the Blogging Guide Newsletter is discounted to $49.99.
The course will be launched October 12, 2020 on Gumroad.
Once the course is released on October 12, 2020, the price will revert to its intended starting price of $39.99 for the course and $79.99 for the complete package.
A major priority in creating this course was to make it affordable and up to date. When I first started as a writer on Medium there were hardly any resources (I spent a lot of time searching).
The majority of the content that I found was riddled with inaccuracies, out of date information, or was extremely expensive.
But my goal in creating this course was to make it first and foremost accessible.
I know what it’s like to be a new writer who is very price conscious and my over arching philosophy when it comes to online content creation is to over deliver.
I’ve been working on this course for some time, but it has finally reached the level where I can confidently say that anyone who buys it will benefit.
So far I have already received 2 pre-orders which I consider a fantastic start!
I will keep IH updated as the course launches and more data comes in.
I came up with the Idea for a course covering Medium long before I created it. When I decided to make a course on Medium writing, my #1 goal was to produce a high quality guide at an affordable price.
When I started on Medium a few years ago, there were hardly any resources for new writers, or writers looking to increase their earnings. The only option was a $400 course which seemed crazy to me as a new writer!
