Launched

After coding an early draft 6 months prior, we cleaned up the code and launched the extension on the Google Web Store. Within 3 months, we had 300,000 users.

The first version only had weather, to-do, clock, and focus widgets, but those were enough to communicate the appeal right away.

Pretty crazy numbers on the Chrome Web Store. Did you guys do any optimizations in order to rank higher?

We had very low expectations of what might happen when we put it up on the Chrome store, so it was a perpetual state of shock at the rate we were accruing users over those first few months. We had much bigger problems with scaling to meet demand than to worry about ranking optimizations at that point.

That's pretty crazy. Heard similar things about other stores as well (non-browser-related). Maybe going on the Firefox/Opera/other-browser-based stores will have the same result for you as well.
