At Next Release, we wanted a way to monitor how our customers are using our application continually, and do it in a way that allowed us to share insights with each other.
If you look around the internet for BI tools, you'll come to realize most of them soon are all very expensive, And the more cost-effective solutions are usually applications you install on a computer.
Which is why we were excited to discover https://www.metabase.com/. It's open-source and can be easily installed either in the cloud or on your Mac. We currently have it running in Heroku for about ~$16 a month. All in all, it only took us a couple of hours to get it up and running, connected, and showing us valuable information.
This tool has been instrumental for us. We use it to track KPIs, feature usage, subscriptions, etc.
Speaking of KPIs, we've defined a couple for ourselves. Using Metabase, we are now targeting seven new signups per week (roughly one per day) and 30 releases per week. We're continually looking for ways to refine these KPIs.
