How I increased newsletter’s open rate by 84%

I would like to share my thoughts about the last test on my newsletter’s group.
I tested two types of email’s title: generic and contextual one with emoji 🎉
It’s not a secret knowledge that emails perform better with emojis. Let’s have a look at my example then:

Newsletter A
Title: Top UX products from the last week
Open rate (first hour) : 69 users
Clicks: 13

Newsletter B
Title: Spark, Overflow, Scrumpy and more 🎉
Open rate (first hour) : 127 users
Clicks: 30

Lesson: Contextual title with emoji is a perfect match ❤️

Awesome! I am running Growthhacklist - if you want you could share the results also there: https://growthhacklist.com/contribute

You changed the title too so maybe it’s because of that. To do a proper test you should keep all else equal.

Yep, I agree. That was not typical A/B test. I just wanted to explore new paths to reach users ;)

From what I've seen, vague - albeit clickbaity - subject lines don't work as well as those with a straightforward message. But it may differ from niche to niche.

Nevertheless, you should do more tests and always keep in mind the statistical significance.

Here's a quiz I made earlier this year if you want to give it a try: https://growthrocks.com/blog/email-subject-line-quiz/
Can you guess which subject lines had the highest open rate?

  4. 1

Were both sent at the same time, to similar cohorts? How many recipients on each list?

Will have to test the emoji out on my list :)

I was getting 60% open rates but now i'm getting 45% and lower, so need a way to boost that open rate.

I can share that I run a similar experiment with LibHunt's newsletter recently; however, I didn't have the same success.

    Sent emails: ~13k
What I did: Prepended all email subjects with relevant emojis.
Outcome: No increase in the open rate. In fact, it even dropped a bit and I'm considering removing the emojis now :)

Did you put it at the beginning or at the end of the title?
