Being tired of always procrastinating and wasting my time on social media I tried a bunch of focus extensions but always ended up uninstalling them.
It was time to make a change. I read up a lot on psychology and especially behavior science and why we the classic extensions don't work. Apparently completely blocking pages is like denying a child candy – it will only make them want it more.
Armed with this knowledge I ventured out to make a new and improved focus extension that wouldn't make me want to uninstall it after a week.
That's when I came up with the puzzle idea. You see, my extension will not block the site for you completely, it will just put a road block in your way that you have to climb over. You will still be able to see the page, but your brain will think it's a sort of reward.
Procrastination is an endless craving for a quick dopamine rush, such as going to Reddit or checking Instagram. If that dopamine rush is not denied, but delayed, it will be blunted in your brain.
Solving Tangram puzzles is actually quite difficult, so your brain will think "What?! I just wanted a dopamine hit and now I have to solve this puzzle and actually give effort? F* this!". Over time, this will trigger your brain to stop wanting to go procrastinate.
