Roll a Twitter thread into a blog post
Have you ever wanted to maximize the impact of your Twitter threads, or think Twitter threads should be blog posts? Yeah me to! I created Roll Your Tweet because I saw threads a temporary but a blog is permanent.
I got a lot of feedback from Roll Your Tweet, including:
So, I tackled each of these issues in the re-write, here is how!
I spent some time reading through limitations of Twitter API, and ended up figure out how to retrieve 3200 tweets, so on first time login we retrieve them all.
I am now using a rich text editor that, anyone can get on with. It's super quick, easy and mobile friendly.
Originally there wasn't a way to just place a twitter ID in and get the thread back. So now you can.
It was slow due to many API calls taking too much time, so we sped some calls up, reduced processing, and also changed DB providers. Speed is key.
I spent some time evaluating what I believed were sticking points from feedback from users.
I spent time creating a new UI that looks and feels easier to understand and navigate to what you need. For example settings, in the near future we are going to abstract some more layers so that the user can select at a more granular level.
Overall it has improved time on the site and time in the product.
Today after a silent launch, I officially launched Rol Your Tweet. I am extremely happy with the product in it's current form.
Sure there are bugs and the UI isn't perfect but the MVP should and is good enough to entice people to use it.
I launched with a free plan and a single premium plan. The free plan allows users to download markdown where as the premium allows users to use Hashnode, Medium and Devto
When I created the MVP the mobile support was mediocre at best, you could use it, but the editing experience was terrible, this was because I was using a side by side editing experience.
I sat down on Sunday, and created a custom rolled editing experience that allows a user to edit and then preview with a click of a button.
On mobile this is a great experience now because they have the full width of a phone, even if its tiny to work with. Plus on tablets people get a great experience.
The MVP was completed and used the following stack:
It has some great core features out of the gate including:
Full Media and Link detection that rolls down the links to the originally links.
It has been in beta for the last 2 weeks with great feedback
Kept seeing Twitter threads that with a few tweaks could be hugely impactful blog posts, but taking a thread and making it in to a blog post is painful.
I decided to investigate if and why no one had created an app for it. Roll Your Tweet was born, as I had found a single app that did something similar... Poorly and required the users to enter there thread manually.
