🎉 $9k MRR in < 5 months!

Kevin Conti @Kevcon80

Over the past weekend, Software Ideas hit $9k MRR!

This growth has been due to some finding some organic success with some long-tail SEO keywords, as well as the awesome readers of Software Ideas who continue to share the newsletter around. I'm incredibly thankful!

Just 4-ish months ago, I was deciding if this was an idea worth pursuing. I hope my progress inspires people, especially if you've been grinding for a while now.

All it takes is one product that people are willing to pay for, and a way to reach customers!

It's been barely a week since you hit 100k ARR! 🤯

Please forgive my lack of SEO knowledge, but when you say you found some success with some long-tail SEO keywords, what exactly do you mean. I mean, what did you actually do to rank well over those keywords?

    1. 2

      Same question for me too.

      1. 0

        Just responded above!

The success so far has been a pleasant, organic surprise. The website has naturally ranked for a few long-tail keywords, and now my job is to add articles, blog posts, etc to move us from the bottom of the first page up to the top.

I'll definitely be sharing more specifics once I've put in the work!

    Hey Kevin,

Superb work man, you're definitely killing it.

I've got few ideas on your landing page and I feel you'd like it.

Also, I see that your blog isn't frequently updated. I take it that you're busy with other key things.

If you'd like a hand with that, shoot me a DM on twitter and let's talk.

Once again, congrats on the $9K MRR.

I think you have a typo: "The membership site includes a the newsletter archive"

    1. 1

      Fixed! Thank you very much!

  4. 2

What's your main source of acquiring paid customers?

    1. 1

Twitter, SEO, word of mouth, and communities like Indie Hackers are the big four for me!

  5. 2

Congratulations Kevin. Have you ever considered transforming the newsletter into a membership site (not a community) where people could discuss each issue?

    1. 0

Curious on how you're splitting the difference between a membership site and a community.

I do have plans to add a community to the Software Ideas subscription, which will include places to discuss the ideas, find co-founders for them, and loads more!

      1. 1

With a membership site you periodically post new content on your website behind a paywall and members can read and discuss it. It's basically a stripped-down version of a community, more limited but also easier to manage. For example here's Podia landing page.

I just signed up! Amazing product you've created!

    1. 0

Thanks so much for the support!

  7. 2

Truly inspiring! It takes a lot to create such a good product.

    1. 1

Thanks! It's a ton of work but definitely worth it

  8. 2

    Love it, and signed up!

    1. 1

Wow, thanks so much! Glad to hear you're finding it valuable!

  9. 2

Congrats buddy. Listening to your episode on newsletter crew pod - can empathize with the copycats, have had paid subscribers launch their own at lower price points.

    1. 1

Thanks, yea that was a fun interview to do, I think I probably rambled a bit too much haha.

It happens, thankfully I've yet to see a copycat who I thought was actually competing with me on value or effort.

  10. 2

That's great you used long tail key words! Do you have any examples you can share? How did you select them?

    1. 1

They've all come organically for now, but I'm looking into doubling down on this and I'll have actual things to share publicly soon!

Probably won't be specific keywords due to copycats, but I can definitely share methodology and strategy

      1. 1

ok, no worries - yeah, I guess I've used ubersuggest and I'm curious what domain difficulty or keyword volume you went for. I've heard people say you should go for the very easiest, lower volume words

        1. 1

Yep, I'm very inspired by Jordan O'Connor content, he's done a great job of nailing SEO and I'll be looking to replicate his success in this area

          1. 1

Did you start having success before reaching out to me? If not, that’s some quick SEO!

    1. 1

Thanks Mutamuls! Glad to hear it!
