After leaving my startup in 03/2021, I've started to mentor startups on their journey. We realized that having a weekly newsletter with hands-on business tips specifically for early-stage founders would be very helpful.

November 18, 2021 70 newsletter subscribers in month 1

I've published so far 5 articles. Every week I see that engagement increases (open rate, click rate...)

Distribution channels that work best for me (in terms of sign ups):

  • LinkedIn Post
  • Reddit Post
  • Medium Post

Channels I've tried but almost no traffic:

  • Slack groups
  • Facebook groups
  • Twitter (just started a Twitter account for that, so I have no following)
  • hackernews (got traffic, but no engagement/signups)
October 10, 2021 Newsletter launched on Substack

I've set up my newsletter account on Substack and published my first 3 articles.

From taking the decision to start my own newsletter to officially launching on Substack it took me about 4 weeks.

What I did in those 4 weeks:

  • Talked to early stage founders and find out if there is a need for another newsletter
  • Decided for a Tool (Substack vs. Medium vs. Mailchimp)
  • Drafted the first blog posts
September 15, 2021 Intention to launch my own Newsletter

After working with around 10 startup founders I slowly realized that they face similar challenges and like the learning I've shared with them.

I started to wrote down my learning and got positive feedback. So I've realized that this is really valuable and a newsletter with hands-on business tips tailored for early-stage founders and startups is really missing.
