I wanted to sell a table online. I cound't find any easy way to do it. In Tabslu you can easily plug in a Google sheet and sell it using Stripe.

October 28, 2020 Update

I am doing some marketing: i.e. engaging into online discussions when the topic is selling lists, tables, or data. As a hands-on dev, it turns out it is the most challenging thing to do for me. I will soon write down when I have any update about this.

In the meantime, I slightly improved the platform following some feedback:

  • I revised pricing again. Now you can choose between a $0 dollar plan and a $10 plan. There was no point in keeping prices high at this stage.
  • I double checked grammar in the landing page and added use-case examples https://tabslu.com/#examples

I also got quite useful feedback about comparing Tabslu to Gumroad. I copy and paste it here (I asked for permission):

  1. I'm a bit afraid of international sales taxes, VAT... so it's great to have Gumroad take care of that for me
  2. I like the ease to make a nice Gumroad landing page. Seeing https://tabslu.com/abc makes me afraid that folks won't understand what I sell (comparing it to https://gumroad.com/l/top-shopify-stores).
  3. Even though I've never had sales with Gumroad marketplace, they do list my product on a marketplace giving it more visibility.

These are very good points:

  1. I hadn't noticed that Gumroad automatically computes VAT. I always thought that Stripe was the best choice in terms of online payments. I will see what I can do about this.
  2. This was an actionable point. I improved each landing page when you sell a table with: some preview, and optional title and description. Here is an example: https://tabslu.com/abc
  3. Another good point. This is something I would implement if the platform takes off.
October 19, 2020 Followed some advice

Following some advice from https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=24799710 I decided to have to plans for Tabslu:

  • A starter plan which costs $0 per month but charges 50 cents + 10% for each table sold
  • A subscription plan (the original option) which costs 29$ per month but does not charge anything for the first 100 tables sold. Then, next tables will be charged 5% each.
October 16, 2020 Launched on Product Hunt

Finally I am OK with what I built. I was finally ready today to launch Tabslu on Product Hunt and Reddit. I mainly followed this for the launch https://medium.com/itemsy/5-non-obvious-lessons-learned-from-our-product-hunt-launch-c9371d543b38 Possibly doing this on Friday is not the best option because the newsletter with products of the day will be sent on Monday.

October 2, 2020 Publish Medium article

I wrote down a brief article about my motivations to build Tabslu. Mainly, I looked into different things: selling a Google sheet link, selling an Airtable link, or build a tailored page with no-code tools. All these solutions had some pitfalls that I didn't like. I wrote about these here: https://medium.com/@ialuronico/how-to-sell-a-table-d7ec8d01d57b

October 1, 2020 Published preview landing page

I made https://tabslu.com available for online preview. On this website you can find some info about "how is works" and some motivations for its existence.

Tabslu is not yet ready to be used though. I am writing a Medium article to talk about the reasons why I am building this tool.
