The 8-bit pixelated feel of the app is on purpose (in case your wondering) but would love to hear any thoughts / feelings it evokes (i.e. - feel free to hate).

I just tried but I have no clue what it is. Is it an answering machine, an audio player, a voice message app?

Haha - you’re actually super close. It’s a voice messaging app with self-destructing messages (think Snapchat + answering machine). From your feedback I’m gathering that I’ll likely want to have a walkthrough on sign up that describes the app’s major features.

Oh snapshat for voice message. Yeah now that's clear.
Instead of doing walkthrough that most people skip, start with a black and white wireframe, and work only on the UX flow and layout. It should be understanble with no colour.
Also try to avoid jargon that people would not immediately understand like "ANSA MATIC", "SPKR"
