Authentication is a pain
by Amy @But, I’m making progress. I decided to go with Firebase for hosting and services and while I could get authentication working great in a bare bones create-react-app, I struggled with getting it working in the template I decided on.
I now have auth working (minus something strange with Facebook) with some authorization. Next up is hook to a database to get authorization completed as well as:
- Saved profiles that users can edit
- App tier system
- Subscription setup
- A ton of little things with the UI
I need all of that before I can introduce the product into the app. I needed the protection wrapper first.
Not as far as I wanted to be at this point but I’m learning a ton very quickly.

I prefer AWS Amplify framework and backend. They have out the box authorization react controls (integrated with Congito) and sample app can be created in seconds.

My apologies, but why did you bother with Cognito?

Its fully integrated with other AWS services.

Thanks!! I’ll look into that tomorrow. I ended up choosing Firebase for the price for dev for now. No traffic = 0 cost.
Just worked to fix my account. I should be on the 12 mo free tier. Will see.
EDIT: No AWS until they remove the $73 hold posted on my card. Ugggg.

I'm also looking into authentication. Did you try searching for other solutions besides Firebase?
And as to Firebase so far, anything you love or hate?
