Visa List Revenue

Travel Industry is the most hard hit sector. I see the trend to continue for atleast this quarter. Probably things might look good for the next quarter.

More than the revenue dip, personally I miss my travels.
On another note, I have been working on coronavirus tracker, even though it doesn't generate any actual revenue, gives me satisfaction that I'm doing my small bit.

Also all the pro features in Visa List are free to use for a month keeping #COVID19 in mind.

We have also entered into a recession. I have no idea how long this will take, but I have new project in my mind so I will keep myself occupied. I hope there will be light at the end of the tunnel and we will pull though this together.

February 27, 2020 Visalist crossed 400K MAU and $40K ARR

Visa List is my most successful microstartup so far. One thing that made this milestone possible is the corona virus trackers which has now been used by more than 150K people. I feel good and bad at the same time, bad because we are facing such huge pandemic and good because iโ€™m able to help travellers during such difficult times.

The growth rate is now around 15% which bring the MAU to 405K users so far. The revenue has been also stable.

So i have decided to take a break from visa list and build something else that i have been ideating from sometime. Thanks everyone who has been there showing supporting, giving feedback and cheering for me. This Indie Makers journey of 3 years has been absolutely amazing.

February 9, 2020 Post went viral on Reddit and got 40K users

Last week i was trying to find information on corona virus and its spread but as its distributed with different agencies, it was becoming difficult everyday to get a complete sense of whats happening. So i thought of building a website which aggregates the different sources of data and lets you stay on top of this global pandemic. It took me 24 hours to build and it now ready. I thought it will be very useful as i feel lot of us want to track this and stay vigilant. It has latest toll numbers for the Novel Coronavirus epidemic, see affected regions, stats, casualties and more. Its data is collected from WHO and other government agencies and updated everyday. I though this will be useful to people of Visa List and other who have some plans to travel, so i posted it on Reddit and it kind of went viral. I just thought it will be get more reach but oh boy, it went crazy.

First i posted a video of it and it made a comment on the link but it was hidden by their bot, after an hour and sending multiple messages to the mods, it got approved. Now things started looking good. Immediately it started pickup upvotes and comments. It reached 2k upvotes and after 2 hours everything stopped. I only realised this after an hour . It turns out my post was removed. I was dumbstruck but quickly messaged again to the mods. Fortunately, it was approved again.
After 19 hours, its around 23.5K upvotes and got me 40K users.

January 4, 2020 3 New milestone crossed $7K MR, $25K ARR, 350K MAU

This is new I'm super excited as I crossed three new milestones. The monthly revenue has crossed $7000 and the total revenue has crossed $25000. The total monthly active user has reached 360K.

The new year has brought lot of joy for the hardwork I have been doing from last one year.

I also have a personal update, where I have reached my goal of $300 per day or $9000 per month from all my microstartups. Next goal is $400 per day. Challenge accepted ๐Ÿ‘.

December 18, 2019 Crossed $20,000 in total revenue within a year

Finally i have crossed to $20k in total revenue and proud to say that Visa List is my 3rd micro startup to reach this milestone.

Two months back i crossed $5000 in monthly revenue and if i can manage to stay constant, i would reach $50K in under 6 months. This is very wishful, but looking at the traffic, i think i will be able to hit that milestone may be even early.

I have also improved the UX for Open Startup page of visa list.

December 16, 2019 I got $100K acquisition offer for Visa List

After my Visa List launch on ProductHunt, i posted a gist of my journey on Reddit and what do you know, i got a message from a some guy who said he was willing to buy Visa List for $100K.

This is not the first time i got an offer to sell Visa List, in fact i think this is the 7th time in a year. It made me think what is actually the value of Visa List and how can i decide that irrespective of whether i want to sell or not. So i did some math based on Visa List stats

  • MAU : 310K
  • Monthly Page Views : 650K
  • Monthly Revenue : $5,000
  • Growth Rate: 10%
  • Yearly Revenue w/o Growth: $60,000
  • Yearly Revenue w/ Growth: $106,921

Selling for $10000 would mean a loss of $6000 on the face of it but you are actually losing a lot more revenue. Usually you have to consider the lifetime value, let's say you 5 years, you can potentially make $0.5M or may be more so you are actually losing a lot.

On the other hand cash flow is more risky and there is no guarantee if it will actually survive for that long and keep the growth rate. Having said that, these acquisition offers rarely close, so 95% of the time someone is just wasting yours and their time at the same time.

I'm not saying you shouldn't sell, you can if you need cash very badly and/or you don't believe in your microstartup very strongly. No shame in admitting that, not every idea can be successful. I have more than 10 ideas didn't see the light of the day.

I believe in Visa List and wouldn't sell it for money any day but thats just me. What do you guys think?

December 15, 2019 How I grew Visa List to $5000 per month in 1 year

Visa List started out as simple list of visa requirements for all countries with detailed visa process and documents for 50 countries so that travellers can go anywhere they want easily. This was a solution to visa issues I faced when I wanted to travel. Since then it's grown to 100+ countries and now features visa exemptions, dual passport requirements and many data points like flight prices, weather, distance, economy status and travel advice. Iโ€™m adding new countries every day so that you can use Visa List for all your visa requirements.

Visa List makes money mostly from ads and affiliates. Most of the site is freely usable but to use some filters, community chat and visa advice, you need to pay. Users pay monthly, annual or once for a lifetime membership. Revenue ranges from $5,000/m to $6,000/m. See https://visalist.io/open. It became profitable after 2 months of launch.

But it didn't start making $5000 immediately, it started with $500 per month and grew slowly over the span of a year.

Initially I placed ads on visa list and was getting around 100K pageviews around a month. But the ads revenue was not that great at all. I tried to apply for skyscanner partnership because I knew that there would be good need after getting visa, but unfortunately I got rejected. I think the main reason was it was I was not getting a lot of traffic.

With a heavy heart I tried different ad networks like video ads, content ads but none of them improved the revenue. All this while, i never lost sight of my goal to increase the SEO and along the way get more users to Visa List.

Suddenly after a month I got an email from skyscanner from saying that they are interested in partnering with, this was another team. I was so happy and realised that things come around eventually. In a month I integrated skyscanner and it started a good stream of revenue from visa list.

After 5 month around june, people from iVisa contacted me. They provide visa service and visa assistance across the world which was perfect. I was very happy to partner with them as well and thus opened 3rd revenue stream.

Along the way I also learning AdOps so i could monetize the traffic I was getting and finally after 6 months things started working out. So my first channel also started contributing a good chunk to overall revenue.

After around 8 month i started an experiment with Visa List membership which i have been sitting on it for a long time. I was not really sure what was the most valuable information that travelers really need so they won't mind paying. Looking at Nomad list and starter story, i finally put in a set of features that i thought can be useful for Pro members. I'm happy that the experiment paid off adding to the 4th revenue stream.

A year back, I launched the first version of Visa List on Product Hunt. It's been a crazy adventure since then. I've travelled to 10 countries during this time and along the way Visa List has helped more than 2 Million people from all over the world with their visa needs.

Today I launch the second iteration of Visa List, I've worked on this with passion, some doubts and lots of love from friends, family and indie community. I made everything on this site mostly by myself so I'm super excited.

This is my 3rd successful microstartup and I spent most of my time over the last 2 years making this, thank you for being part of it ๐Ÿ™ƒ

November 22, 2019 1st Anniversary: 2M users and $15k revenue

A year back i did a soft launch of Visa List and it has been a roller coster ride since then. The community has given me a lot from motivation, feedback, direction and a lot of inspiration which have collectively been a huge contribution to where I'm standing now with Visa List.

๐Ÿ† 1st place on Product Hunt
๐Ÿ† 1st position on Hacker News
๐Ÿ† Top position on Reddit
๐Ÿฅˆ 2nd position in Golden Kitty Awards
๐ŸŒŸ Got featured on Lifehacker, Gizmodo, Esquire
๐Ÿ™Œ 2M Total Users
๐Ÿšฆ 6M Total Page views
๐Ÿ”Ž 25M Search Impressions
๐Ÿ‘ฅ 300K+ MAU
๐Ÿ’ธ $15K Total revenue
๐Ÿ’ฐ $5000 Monthly revenue
๐Ÿ› ๏ธ $500 Total cost

I'm kind of proud of what i have been able to do in a year but i still think there is a long way ahead. I want Visa List to be one stop shop for all your visa needs. Keep the feedback/ suggestions coming as always. Thank you everyone for all for the support ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿ’–.

November 1, 2019 Crossed $5000 MRR in less than 11 months

Finally i have crossed to $5k MRR and proud to say that Visal List has attained ramen profitability. I was achieve all this in less than 11 months of official launch. The revenue has increased ๐Ÿ’ฏ% over previous month .

So how did i reach here? When i launched Visa List, i was very skeptical about the usefulness of visa requirements. But that quickly changed when it became viral and the traffic exploded in a week. I realised there is a huge need to for streamlined visa requirements, documents and all that. But with all the traffic, i only had ads here and there and no business plan in place. So couldn't generate much revenue. But over the period i added different channels to increase the total revenue.

Visa List Revenue

Visa List is an Open Startup

  • #1 Traffic: The traffic whent down to 30K users after initial month traffic of 150K users so i concentrated on SEO and slowly but steadily i improved the traffic to 300K users.

  • #2 Partnerships: I started Partnerships with Visa agency for Processing visa for people who don't have time to do it themselves. This was for people who need visa, then what about people who don't need visa or who can get visa on arrival. So for them i got into a partnership with Skyscanner and started showing flights prices

  • #3 Pro Membership: So after thinking about how to sustain viability of visa list in long-run. It started as an experiment to see if people who really need use lot of the pro features would pay. I'm now confident and can say that this experiment was a success and you can should never really dismiss any ideas untill you give it a try first, especially if it's about revenue.

  • #4 Ads: I personally don't like to show ads. Everyone thinks that if you get traffic you can get revenue but this is not true. There ar so many parameters and permutations and experiments you need to do. There is a whole profession aroudn this called AdOps. It was not at all easy for me but i kept at it like everything else in my life and if not immediately but eventually i cracked it. Once i reach a threshold with other channels i will probably remove it but as of now this has been not only essential to keep me motivated but also has been a big contributor for the total MRR.

I wanted to share this big milestone with my community as i have learned so much and helped me in different stages of my indie hacker journey and i hope this may be useful to others aswell.

I would also definitely appreciate any feedback/ suggestions/ feature requests from my fellow indie hackers.

October 28, 2019 Crossed $1000 revenue from Pro subscriptions

40 days after launch i have finally crossed $1k in revenue and total revenue is at $1200. Last month it was just $200 and after some tweaking the current month revenue from subscriptions alone is $1000 till date.
It started as an experiment to see if people who really need use lot of the pro features would pay. I'm not confident and can say that this experiment was a success and you can should never really dismiss any ideas untill you give it a try first, especially if it's about revenue.
I'm very excited for this month as I'm hopeful to cross 4k in total revenue from all other sources for Visa List. ๐Ÿคž

If you have any suggestions/ feedback/ insights, please do share!
