Zigpoll in 2019

I launched Zigpoll in April of this year after about 6 months of development. I posted on PH and IH, built a Shopify app, and did the rounds posting on various free forums and lists to spread awareness.

In the hopes that sharing will be helpful to some other indie hacker, here's some of the meaningful numbers for the year:

472 Users
598 Accounts (a user can have more than one account if they want)
445 Polls
1,226 Slides

11 paid accounts

68,436 people have filled out a Zigpoll on the web

I think it's a pretty good start for a budget of zero. Although it definitely doesn't support me - I think there is wind in the sails since at least 11 people are willing to pay for it.

The plan for 2020 is to iterate and expand out on the features that get the most use from our paying customers. I'm excited for what it has in store!

Happy Holidays!

I love the design. Simple and slick. Are you the designer yourself?

Thanks I really appreciate it. Yes I designed the page (I just built it and did live editing with CSS, there was no real formal design process). Glad you like it!

I see you bought a MOZ Pro account, but you have very little backlinks to your site?
Was it worth buying a MOZ Pro subscription?

    1. 1

I have multiple websites so that's why I have the MOZ account. For just this account I would say no it's not worth it. To be honest I'm not sure it's worth it w/ the other two sites but it makes more sense. Also I'm curious, how did you figure that out? I don't think there are any links on my site or anything. Thanks!

not bad, your landing and the product look quite mature and polished.

not really having any insights into this market and just assuming that there must be tons of other polling tools:

    1. what are you doing 10x better? is it this poll integration as site support chat?

    2. why did you opt for a crowded market?

    3. how do you lock in customers?

    4. 11 paying user feels little low for 10months; didnt you try to acquire users through perf marketing?

    5. whats the most used poll type 5.1) users use, 5.2) paying users use?

Thanks for the thoughtful feedback :)

To be honest I wasn’t aware of just how saturated the polling market was when I started. That being said I built the product because no alternative existed for what I wanted: a fun polling pop up I could include in my e-commerce site. From this perspective I think it’s a unique product category (like live chat meets polling software). I think this lets us get away with only being 2-3x better instead of 10x.

The lock in comes from the data you get from your audience. For example I run an ecommerce store and we use zigpoll as a post purchase survey. The styling of it captures our customers attention and we have about a 30% interaction rate. The written feedback we get alerts us of our common pain points. For example we learned that we had too many items sold out and it was bothering customers. So we started hiding those items and the complaints stopped w/ all other metrics being close to equal or better.

What’s exciting to me is that there are so many different ways you can use the product depending on your business. So I feel like there are a lot of niches that can be valuable to consumers.

Thanks again for your thoughts. I’m traveling currently but I’m going to really give it some thought when building out new features to make sure I avoid those pitfalls.

Also what is perf marketing? I’m wondering if I’m missing something there.

perf marketing is performance marketing. You can do it if your CAC<LTV.

re your product: I think it's one of the most polished products in this space and the poll-meets-chat-twist is indeed a nice differentiation which could win many sales pitches.

in general your business is a sales-heavy business, means you win customers rather over a strong sales force than a better product. idk if suitable but either you are going to do 100% b2b/enterpise sales in 2020 which is terrible and super slow-paced + expensive entersprise contract or get somebody. latter isnt recommended for the start because you should first master b2b sales yourself, so you know what kind of people you need.

Thanks for sharing. Looks like you are well on your way! I really love how your landing pages and the zigpoll widgets are looking. Seems like you have built a great product. Hope you will gain a lot more paying customers in 2020. Good luck!

Thanks! I really appreciate it :) it’s been a lot of work but it’s fun to build something from the very start. Happy holidays 🎉
