Explain what your startup/project does in under 10 words

Hey IHs!

A month ago, I had started a discussion(tinyurl.com/in10words) asking makers to explain what their startup/project is about, in under 10 words.

This is the follow-up post. If you're new to the community or have launched something recently, tell us about it in under 10 words

If you had commented in the previous discussion, share your milestones (number of users/subscribers, profitable, etc.) ✌

Are you using an API to get all the various news sources?

      1. 1

@BlueMidnight I am not using any API but using my own code to get the news from hundreds of endpoints.

    2. 1

    1. 2

Ooo! I love the idea. Food for thought, allow other people to contribute to my LazyJar. Or group LazyJars. I would sign up in a heartbeat if my wife and I could do this together lol

      1. 1

Interesting. Will definitely have to add that in a later iteration.

    2. 1

Great idea. How do you handle payments? To people authorize payment each time they get a penalty or how does it work?

      1. 1

We rely on a third party payment gateway that holds onto CC info longer than a month. This allows us to conditional charge the card.

        1. 1

I thought that charitable donations weren't allowed in IOS apps. How did you get around it? Do you take donations in the app itself or in webview?

          1. 1

The donation is not made right away. We pool the donations at the end of the year and send them to St Judes.

            1. 1

Did you let Apple/Google know this at the time of submitting the app? Any trouble getting approved? Am asking because theres a project I'm thinking about that involves charitable donations. Any thing else I should know?

              1. 1

                Check out Beeminder.

They are very similar to our app. Except they do a lot more than just track your fitness.

And they use Stripe. Not Apple Pay.

              2. 1

Yes, users are entering CC into the App (obviously we don't store it)

But keep in mind that we use the CC to charge them a penalty. As far as Apple is concerned we are getting paid for a service.

We are not a charity organization. And we don't use Apple Pay.

                1. 1

                  Interesting. Thanks for your help.

                  1. 1

For whatever is worth, we have a major upgrade coming up. Hopefully we don't have any problems when we send it in.

              3. 1

Sorry for overloading you with stuff. But here is another Fitness app that's donating money on behalf of its users.

                Charity Miles

                1. 1

I use Charity Miles, and my understanding is that the app doesn't donate money directly. It is an interface to an agreement behind the scenes with the sponsors. So, a User never gives money via the app directly.

              4. 1

Also we don't use Apple Pay to take money from our users. This could another one of the multiple reasons why we made it to the app store.

                1. 1

So you create a webview and take the payment details on a website rather than in the app? And there is a field during app submission where you can add notes? Or did you call them? Have not submitted an app before

                  1. 1

Right there is a field where you provide details about your app's workflow and profit model if any.

Also, you are required to provide a sample user account that the reviewer can play with.

                    1. 1

Ok so what I dont get is that apple says explicitly that donations can only be taken via safari or sms. Are users inputting CC information inside the app?

              5. 1

Right they know this. I had to explain it before approval.

We don't send the donations via the app. We take the cut for the donations from the penalties at the end of the year and send it manually.

This idea makes me smile. I've always loved hearing other people humming because it's one of the easiest confirmations that they're truly happy at that moment -- very cool to spread that through your app.

      1. 1

That's a good thought, Ryan. I always hum songs when I'm happy and it will be good to spread this message through the app. I'll think of something 😁

    2. 2

I really like this idea. The app will only get better the more people you have.

      1. 2

Glad to hear that :) I literally just had a bunch of people joining now and some of them even started humming songs. I'm the happiest person on the planet at the moment 😍

Just a note, remove word "issues" next to subscribers. This (for a tech person, non-native) strikes like some kind of GitHub repo. It took me few seconds to figure out you are talking about actual issues, like lists issued.

I would change that to "issued".
