Free way to set up email hosting on your own domain?
I have my own domain, but I'm having trouble finding cheap/free email hosting (e.g. stephen@pmlesson.com) services online. G Suite seems to be a solid option at $5/mo/user, but I'm working with a team of three and we'd love to each have our own set up.
Is there a simple solution I'm missing that would provide the email hosting (e.g. stephen@pmlesson.com) without the bells and whistles of a full G suite account?
http://zohomail.com/ is free, you can link it to your domain easily. I use it for one of my domain.

Google domains offer email forwarding for free (to an existing Gmail inbox for example)
You can also do this with Mailgun free tier. Set up a domain (CNAME, MX, etc) and add a forwarding rule to your existing Gmail inbox, in Gmail you can set up the inbox to be able to "send as".
This is working well and often enough for an early stage project.
Thanks Guillaume - I can set up email forwarding, but then I can't actually send emails from my own domain - is this what you're doing?

Yep. Namecheap works well and is reasonably priced. Happy User so far. Their spam filters are also pretty good and comparable with Google.
Seconded - as far as hosting provided webmail goes, Namecheaps is the best I've used by far.

Worth pointing out that AWS SES (Simple Email Service) can be used to manage both your transactional marketing style bulk email and also to forward emails sent to your domain email to inboxes like Gmail. I use it like this and get a vanity email which autoforwards to my actual gmail inbox. I can also respond as my vanity email address from gmail.
I have always used the free plan of Zoho Email for my side-projects. Unfortunately they changed the package a few months ago and they don't do IMAP / POP3 for free accounts anymore. But only 2 dollar per month for the paid version.
If you use Namecheap then Namecheap Email is also an option. It's less than 10 dollar a year per mailbox.
I paid $90 for 10 years (!) of mxroute.com, unlimited domains and email accounts. Not sure if they still have that deal going.

Would something like Improvmx.com works? I'm not sure that's what you are looking for.
As my website hosting provider has a CPanel I am able to set up email accounts within (although this does depend on the package they give you).
