Get more claps on Medium, with support from the IH community

Hi everyone,

Where I work, our communication team uses a lot Medium.com and frequently asks us (teammates) to go clap their new posts. Long story short, I made an extension that clicks on the clap button 50 times for me. Allyship.eu was born.

As they are quite a few publishers here, I was thinking that we could all do the same to support posts from the community and give them more visibility.

So I just created a workspace for that. Being part of it is pretty simple. Go to Allyship.eu, install the extension, then join the "indiehackers" workspace (or click allyship.eu/join?workspace=indiehackers).

Rules within the workspace are simple:

  • everyone within the workspace will add 50 claps on each post :)

  • everyone from the community can send me a post to auto-clap (Twitter and email are on my profile)

  • I'll put a limit of 2 posts to clap per day.

Hope you will like it!

As a big lover of the Medium platform, I'm not sure how to feel about a project like this. It's good to get support the community, but artificially inflating clap counts maybe isn't the best way to do that. This may just lead to giving high clap counts without looking at the quality of a post.

Hi Dmitri, I understand your feeling, but the true goal of Allyship is more about easing the clapping within a team / startups, to give posts more visibility.

I have proposed it to the IH community as it's about helping each others. But you're 100% right and I'll try to do my best to make a quality review before adding each post within this particular workspace.

Any chance to add Product Hunt to this ? :D

      Good idea! :)

A most interesting idea, but it's only a matter of time before Medium's algorithms detect the suspicious activity. Before then, I'll probably try it out! Maybe try randomizing the clap value?

Thanks a lot @Antony_Muga ! See my comment below on this ;)

Hey Corentin, I signed up, that's a great idea!

However, I'm pretty sure that Medium will catch up on that and detect posts with a suspect amount of claps and claps to people ratio.

Maybe you could randomize the number of claps between 30 and 50 claps? Just an idea, but there's a good chance you'll get busted by Medium if they see hundreds of users giving 50 claps to the same posts :/

I completely agree with this, I love the idea of this @Corentin, but it'd be a shame to start getting banned because of it.

Hi @Mehdi and @Sam, I'll have a deep look on randomizing the claps, as you're several to suggest this. But I'm pretty sure that even with a randomized counter, Medium is able to detect this kind of claps. I don't think that playing mouse-and-cat with them is a good idea for the project :)

Especially as the main idea of Allyship.eu is about easing the clapping within a team / startups. I'm more thinking that the number of new claps for a typical post should be limited.

Your idea is interesting to me as I find it fascinating that we, as humans have become obsessed with fake internet points.

Myself I am a Redditor who loves getting karma.

I wonder if its Dopamine that is responsible for all of this, the same as eating some chocolate.

Hi @tomaytotomato, don't have much to say about the philisophy point of view. But in terms of reach / visibility, having more claps is generally better :)

Really cool idea - however I cannot access the workspace (getting an error unfortunately)

Hi @thekaiser! Thanks for the report. It has been fixed now. Let me know if you still face any error :)

Working fine now ! Thanks a lot

Think this is one of the cleanest MVPs I've seen on Indie Hackers. Great idea, good work!

Would love to chat more about potential partnership.

Thanks @darafsheh ! You have my mail on my IH profile ;)

Good idea. Seems so simple. Missing a 'p' on 'active suport'.

Thanks a lot! It has been fixed (still cached though).

Interesting idea! Definitely going to test this out, I have been trying to figure out something like this for a while. Just never thought of actually creating a community like this.

    Thanks for sharing
