Hi, so I have created http://rentsforcheap.com/, and have ran google ads against it trying to promote it and see if the idea is a good one. So far I have gotten a total of 20 clicks with 0 conversions.
I am thinking at this point what else should I do for the webpage before I invalidate the idea. One thing I could do is to make the landing page look like less of a scam and more professional (following https://nichetester.com/).
The other thing I could do is to create a pricing tier. If that still leads to a crappy conversion, it might mean the idea is invalidated.
Please let me know if you have any other ideas, thanks
Well, i took a quick look, I won't talk about the content or your service as I'm not an expert but I have 2 feedbacks to give:
1/ the design/UI looks cheap (not sure if it's intended to mimic the domain name :)). It is not responsive - on my desktop I have an horizontal bar and can only see 2/3 of it
2/ You have a subscribe button which tells me that I need to pay 5 bucks, but your site is not on https. I will never trust you to move further.
Cezar is totally right. The design (coupled w/ the name) makes me want to leave the site as soon as possible. The lack of SSL also makes me want to run.
You can get an SSL certificate and definitely improve the design though! (See more feedback below.)
That's a good point. I never intended to charge anyone, but I do think I need to put my site on HTTPS at least (NicheTester is also on HTTPS but I never noticed), thanks for the feedback.
As far as the cheapness of the UI/design, I am not good at design at all. Can you give me a hint as to how to make it not look so cheap?
Well, in regards to design, my "bad" perception is due to the fact that:
All in all, the design is for sure subjective. As you learn, pay attention to colors, typography and how you position the elements on the page. There are plenty of great designs out there, get some inspiration from them :)
I agree with a lot of your points but, for someone like me who is completely design challenged and can't tell from a good web page from a bad one, what is a better tool for creating multi page landing sites for something like rentsforcheap?
To create rentsforcheap.com I used https://bubble.is/. Is there a better tool than that for quickly creating something similar to https://nichetester.com/?
Have you considered using SquareSpace? Why are you trying to model your design after Niche Tester?
I always go to Dribbble for design inspiration.

I had very little design sense 2.5 years ago. I couldn't tell why certain websites were better than others. Over time though, I started picking it up. The main things to focus on are using consistency (consistent use of colors, font styles, font sizes, spacing, borders, etc) and making it easy to read. If you start there, you'll see serious improvements!
Good luck! 😊
I'll definitely check Dribble out, thanks for your detailed points :) I only modeled after NicheTester because it was simple and I literally no idea what kind of website I wanted to create. I know how to code but, can't design anything to save my life
I think that these are great points. The URL/Product name seems very scheme-ish and immediately causes me to be concerned. When I see "Cheap" in the name of something, it makes me think the concept is a con. You'll also probably get hit as spam. Coupled with a basic site experience makes me doubly concerned.
I wasn't immediately worried about the SSL, but instead felt like I had landed on a "Buy This Domain" type site. I would first reconsider the name and, if you're not design oriented, consider purchasing or using a cheap website template. This site would be a decent starting point for that.
Yea next time I will probably not design my own site, but use some template of some sort instead. Thanks for the advice!
I would point out the misspelling on the pricing page: "Occassional "
Thanks! I just noticed and fixed it
I would try changing the wording on your selling point. If I were to be looking for a textbook, finding a cheaper place to buy them would be an enticing offer because it's the same textbook. Finding a cheap rental makes me worried you're going to be sending me to the slums. I'd try going more for something along the lines of "get the most for your money."
That's actually a great advice, thanks!
I can't open the site, but I will say that you should always analyze similar sites on yours and make a structure (for yours) based on this analysis. Also, you need to work with the texts (in this regard, I advise you to look at the articles and advertising examples on https://answershark.com/writing/business-writing/advertising-copy/advertising-copy-example-headphones.html), so that it's properly structured and is not a copy of other articles. And it should be optimized for different devices - smartphone, PC or tablet.
Agree with all the points below.
I would also point out that you should examine the search funnel from Adwords. Really strong performing non-brand campaigns will typically have a CTR of between 3-5% with a conversion rate of 1-2% and often over a period of time.
If your CTR is below this, it is likely that
I can't see your website anymore but I suspect a service like this may have a longer consideration plan. You are expecting a user to click and convert immediately which is unlikely.
Some suggestions:
Look to be relevant and as a starter focus on ensuring high CTR. via strong CTA, use of ad extensions and bidding. For a new business I would aim for a 1-3% CTR as my success metric.
Narrow down your focus as much as possible via location targeting, device targeting and time of day targeting and bid on the top keywords suggested by Adwords. There are reasons why certain keywords cost more.
Conversions at this point may be too early to judge, look at your analytics (bounce rate will be redundant for a conversion landing page), but time on site will guide you on interested users.
that was indeed what I was looking for. I was hoping for about 5% CTR. My pricing was 5$ a month with no free plan though and I was getting 0 CTR. So I was hoping I can improve the site a bit and offer pricing plans to see if I can get the CTR higher. My bounce rate was of course 100% lol, i had 20 clicks a day with no conversions
(a) You require a subscription to initiate a search. I suspect users are accustomed to a free trial. (b) You're using a subscription model for a infrequent purchase. (c) Your competition, e.g., Craigslist, is free. I think you need to flip the conversation and try getting an exclusive from landlords - and charge them, not the users. The only place the current model might work IMO is New York, where renters routinely pay "brokers" to find off-market apartments. That said, I agree with commentators about the UI and lack of security. Heroku now offers free SSL out of the box.
Good luck!
I added a pricing plan to give a free trial for my new site. Also, I just added SSL. However, the idea was this was for users to not have to go through Craigslist, or Airbnb, and do this for them for an amount of fee. I am not sure if this is an idea that can make money (hence this landing page for validation), but I don't think it will involve landlords
Way to go! Launching something is the first step!
First, the good news:
Now, the bad news:
That's a great point. I used to have forms that allow you fill out how many bedrooms you are looking for, price range and location and stuff. I removed it though and just straight up asked for your email instead
your pricing is ridiculously confusing.. The headers says $19/week but in small text you say billed every 3 months. Why be so weird about it.. Just be up front and tell em exactly what they're paying when.
That's NicheTester I believe you are talking about. My site is rentsforcheap.com. It is $5 a month flat rate
Quick critique,
1)Go with a different color choice for the design. That green looks a bit unprofessional.
Are you talking about the "Get email alerts when cheap homes are available for rent" title, or is it that paragraph underneath the buy button? Can you give an example of what you mean by coming up with something original?
The Title.
And by original, I mean you could show some sort of evidence of how you have solved the problem in the unique manner that you propose.
Can't think of any example, sorry.
i'm not sure what the offer is.
I pay $5 a month for you sending a place to rent?
I think housing is such a personal thing - what I might think is a good place to live, someone else might hate so sorry but don't think this one is a winner.
That might be a good point, but I was planning to test this idea out to see if anyone actually wanted for other people to search a place for you though. There's so many platforms for searching for rent out there, and I see my friends always stressed about finding a place for rent, especially in Vancouver, Canada, I thought I would try to do something like this.
yeah, sorry if i came across as negative.
Maybe you coudl do it so that if they like your suggestion they are charged? It's a decent idea in principle but not sure how easy to charge for it.
100% agree with everything @cezar & @lynnetye said plus also change the title & favicon from 'Bubble Application' to 'RentsForCheap' or something related to your site.
Go through this basic web design guide http://jgthms.com/web-design-in-4-minutes/ (i don't think you know much of CSS but it will help you in understanding basics of the web design)
Nice, I'll definitely go through, thanks for the link!
Your headline is too long, you should condense it or make it 2 lines. Either way I should be able to read the headline without having to adjust my phone in any way
I actually noticed that too when I opened it on my iPad. I think the formatting is still broken, thanks for letting me know
No problem!!
