Hi guys,
My name is Bilal & I'm a software consultant. I usually have clients for whom I end up managing servers. I also have some of my own sites which I've to manage myself.
Now the painful part of managing servers is making sure the database is being properly backing up to a particular service (for instance S3, Dropbox etc.). If you've managed databases yourself you know what I'm talking about, there's a bunch of processes to follow, from setting up cronjobs to monitoring it regularly, keeping a tap on backup sizes, making sure there's enough space on the server disk, getting notified whenever anything in the process fails & other countless edge cases.
I tried using open source libraries to mitigate this problem but the problem with them is tedious setup (every time I've to go through the documentation to ramp up myself), fails silently in some cases, easy to miss a particular database monitoring because no central dashboard, no dashboard for clients so I can provide them a login to monitor backup themselves etc.
To deal with this whole problem I started working on my own solution called AutoBackup (autobackup.io). Once I got a basic prototype working I set it up for my own sites & for my clients. I must say I couldn't be happier & relaxed when the whole process went on an autopilot mode from being managed manually. I have now a good control on database monitoring, health checks & failovers from a single dashboard without logging into multiple servers. This also gives a simple & informative interface where I can quickly add new databases to backup, database backups sizes etc.
I want feedback from the IndieHackers community on would they be interested in using something like this?
