Li'l IH Help? Looking for Feedback on our New Onboarding UX

TL;DR: Wondering if a few fine folks might do a sign in to our app (https://www.flex.io/) and provide some constructive feedback on our new onboarding templates?

...

Hi all,

Flex.io (https://www.flex.io/) is a new web service (beta) for wiring together data processes between web services or via API. The goal of onboarding is to help people be successful building their first pipe. Previously, our onboarding simply was a 3 minute video walkthrough. But, closing the video seemed to mostly prompt a bunch of wandering around the tool, rather than building.

So, in an effort to help folks be successful, we created a few templates that will put users directly into a pipe and, hopefully, show how they work and give them some basic modicum of "success."

I feel like the templates are a step in the right direction, but by no means a perfect solution. Our next step with templates is that we create a bunch of specific use case landing pages outside the app, but then use templates to have folks sign in directly and start using the tool with something relevant to them. Within the app itself, having three random templates to onboard may or may not prove useful.

Anyway, thought it might be helpful to get the wisdom of the crowd to provide constructive criticism or any other helpful ideas. Tool is meant for devs, IT folks and data-saavy people, but I'd welcome any thoughts. :) And, happy to answer any questions on anything too.

Thank you!

Your landing page looks great! However when I sign up, look at your templates, and click "Use This" I get a JavaScript error (screenshot).

Also, I think you would benefit greatly from listening to the recent interview I did with Wade Foster of Zapier, because your tool seems similar.

When I look at what you're doing, I think, "Okay, this could work for me, but none of these templates solve a problem I have right now." I don't feel like browsing around he site to look for a solution to a problem I can't even identify. It feels a bit pointless, like browsing a restaurant menu when I'm not hungry.

Instead of getting random people like me to your website, what you want to do is attract people who are already searching for a solution to specific problem that you can solve well. Get them in the door by solving that one problem for them.

For example, Zapier would go to the customer support forums for businesses like MailChimp, look for people who were searching for "connect MailChimp to Google Spreadsheets", and then tell everyone, "We can fix that for you. Check out this template."

Hey, thanks for the review! Yikes; indeed, the buttons do nothing. Sigh. We'll get on that asasp.

You make an excellent point about the specific pain points and zapier does a fantastic job at this. We're in a similar world of piping, although focsued more on problems of file processing than workflow automation. But, I definitely see this as a roadmap to target specific pain points. Thanks for the tip on the interview -- I'll check it out! And, thanks again for the review; much appreciated!

Your UI design is top-end. Well done.

Honestly, I would never sign up for anything that didn't "look good" at first. Maybe that's superficial but I still feel that it's a strong indicator for competence. So, bravo!

    Couple of bugs:

    • If you enter a password that isn't strong enough, the submit button does not reset upon altering it.
    • Same walkthrough launch button thing @csallen mentioned

    A comment:

There should be a confirm password input. What if I fat-fingered the first attempt?

Hey @robotnoises -- thanks a ton for the feedback! And, appreciate that we've passed the "look good" bar; I am the same way. :)

      To follow-up:

-- Password. I think I've replicated this -- basically, enter a bad password; click submit and then you end up in la la land unless you refresh. Yeah -- the submit button shouldn't even be available if there is an error message. Thnx.

-- Walkthrough launch. It appears we're still having issues. The template seems to load in the background, but the modal doesn't disappear. Is this what you experienced too?

-- Fat fingers! Fair enough. We tried to follow other dev sites, like GitHub for this. The answer for a munged password is that you'd go through the "forgot my password" route and you'd be able to re-enter it in the account area. That said, we do have a double-confirmation in account, so worth considering it for the main one too -- I hate being blind with this stuff myself.

      Thank you again!
