How to Start (And Manage) an Ecommerce Business

Hey guys,
I've lurked for a while and seen a lot of questions that I thought I could help answering - mostly the gritty details of being involved in eCommerce. So many times the boring details are lost in the glamour of sales, and I wanted to produce a valuable resource that highlighted some of these dull tasks that eventually lead to success.

I've written a blog post about it, now totalling over 14,00 words which can be read here: https://www.abastock.co.uk/start-an-ecommerce-business

However my main concern is answering questions that fellow eCommerce owners may have - either before or during start up.

Unsexy questions I've tried to answer are:

  • Why traffic isn't always good
  • Choosing developers
  • Why checking postage is important before you buy stock
  • Quick competitor research
  • How to pick your CMS (and why Shopify isn't always the best)
  • Calculating CRO to influence stakeholders
  • Calculating margins to optimise Cost per sale
  • Why you should spend more time planning your storage and buy good shelving

My main tip for those starting out though is to know exactly who you are selling to, before you buy any product. Then once you have 100s of units of stock, you just have to find them!
