Hi! My name is Lawrence and I started a newsletter that sends one tricky coding interview problem each day. You can find it here: https://dailycodingproblem.com/
I've gotten some feedback that it doesn't fare well with the programmer / hacker demographic, which I agree with and the data seems to support. I'm also a bit concerned the landing page doesn't seem to explain what exactly DCP is. So I'm wondering, what would you guys change about it?
Also feel free to try it out -- I'd love any feedback on the questions and solutions themselves!
Hi lawrence, congrats on the project and getting it out into the open!
Here is my feedback:
Subscribe is a vague and poor call to action. I don't want to subscribe to something, I want to improve my interviewing skills or similar (I'm sure you can come up with a much better CTA than the one I just mentioned, but you get my point)
Tiny mistake - some of the words in your hero section (first part of the page) are capitalised and some aren't. Personally, I think that centered text here is also a mistake - but that's just my subjective opinion
'Helping programmers land jobs at the most sought-after tech firms:' is a weird turn of phrase. It makes it seem like you haven't helped programmers land jobs at the firms you mention, yet want to give that impression anyway. Definitely reword this if you actually have those results...
The full-width text of the example questions is clunky and hard to read. I'd suggest a narrower paragraph width with fewer characters per line (max 75)
You have two real life testimonials. These are really important and should be much higher up your landing page where people can see them. I would put that section second or third
If you aren't mentioning a price anywhere, why does it say free trial at the bottom of the page? This makes you seem untrustworthy. If it isn't free (and I don't see why it should be free if you are providing value), you need to communicate that better.
Good luck!
Hey Louis,
We've taken your suggestions to heart and redesigned our landing page. What do you think?
I think the changes are definitely positive (although to my mind you have too many different fonts, sizes and weights mixed together).
To my mind, you'd still be better off making it clear that the subscription isn't free, however.
scottscheapflights.com has a nice solution to this, where their basic subscription is free and the useful premium subscription is paid. You aren't informed about the paid subscription at all until you have signed up for the free subscription and experienced the value first hand. In your case, the free subscription might be the questions and the premium subscription might include answers explained by {{insert programmer here}}
Good luck!
Thanks again so much for your feedback. We've just changed our model to your suggestion -- free subscription is only questions and premium includes answers.
Good luck!
Hi Louis,
Thanks so much for your feedback, it's amazing! Definitely agree with you on most of those points and we're working on addressing those now.
Most of those seem fairly straightforward to fix except the last one -- we are a paid service although we offer a free trial. How to communicate that better...
Anyways, thanks again! We'll address these issues shortly.
Oh and one more important point - I signed up with my catch-all hotmail email address (@hotmail.com) and both of your emails went straight to my junk folder. Not good.
That is indeed not good. Unfortunately we can't control the spam filter of your email service, believe me I wish I could!
Maybe is not the correct way to do it, but in the meantime, you start to get a following. You could use a 'Gmail' account instead of your domain name to send emails. That way, you could avoid spam filters in 99% of the cases.
I know is not feel good, but it works :)
Hi Lawrence
Your landing page is pretty good, a couple of points:
Good luck
James
Hey James, thanks for the feedback! We've completely redesigned our landing page -- what do you think?
