Hello IH,
I am a developer from Portugal and have been working on Grid Generator, a tool to paint and do patterns.
I hope it to be useful to you if you want to try out some shapes and explore pattern possibilities but struggle with design and complex tools like Illustrator.
This is something like "version 0" because it is not only filled with bugs but also lacks a lot of features (oh, and it does not have any kind of user onboarding, expect some friction).
In this version Grid Generator just gives you a square grid and tile patterns. You can publish the project to put it online and you can export it, but this is a paid feature.
All your creative process is recorded and you can replay it if you want after publishing your work. Here is an example:
