Ask IH: What do you think of standalone-mode for webapps ?
Hey everyone!
Just wondering, how most of you feel about standalone webapps and your experience (if any) with them...
For those who don't know about standalone mode, basically it allows your website to be "installed" and have some native app look and feel. This works by using some meta-tags that make your site standalone-enabled.
Then it can be installed by clicking on the share button and then on + Add to homescreen (both in iOS Safari and Android Chrome)
My site https://spotter.live is quite optimized for standalone mode, so feel free to check it and tell me how you feel about it, and maybe share some cool tips for standalone webapps if you know any! =)
Crawftv, I'm not sure if notifications are possible. This would be nice to find out. I have found that there are lots of optimizations, and not all of them work the same way for all platforms.
For example I had to optimize the way links are opened at the site to keep them inside the standalone mode. Don't know what would happen i you open an external link to a site that you already have installed as a standalone webapp.
I just discovered this features, so i'm still kind of a newbie hehe, and I think this features are still evolving as we speak...
One good thing I can say about this, is that it's easy to convince people with low storage space at their phones to install your app, since it won't take up any space ^^

Ben! I'm not much of a Yelp user, so I don't really know the whole idea of the site besides overall ratings and comments.
The main idea of spotter.live is to provide close to live ratings separating them by time-frames and aggregating them together to achieve a more "democratic" result about how the place might have been 15 min ago or half an hour ago.
Also, the idea is to separate ratings into more specific details, not just an overall rating, so if someone wanted, they could just mark an update of the spot they're at, saying that it's too crowded ( by selecting 5/5 at the crowded slider)
Another difference I think (not sure if this is possible with yelp), is that updates, ratings, and pictures are uploaded anonymously without the need of an account.
Can places verify themselves to edit some content of their profiles at yelp? The other idea at spotter is that spots are able to publish certain things, like offers and promotions.
