austechjobs.com.au is a premium job board for technology jobs in Australia. I have been involved in hiring devs over the past couple of years and have found the standard job ad (seek, linkedin etc) and the candidates it brings underwhelming. Inspired by the micro job board trend I figured I had the skills to start something myself.
The site is a custom build ASP.NET Core web application running on Azure. It has been developed in a way to leave open the possibility of deploying multiple instances for different target markets (if I ever get that far).
Short term plans
- Implement payment gateway and start charging (beginning with featured jobs)
- Improve job seeker experience (favouring jobs, improved notifications and search)
- Grow traffic via promoting to relevant communities, press and creating content
Long term plans
- Add content for training / courses (possible affiliate)
- Add content for listing relevant meetups and communities for the different cities and job roles
- See if I can repeat the trick in a different niche - I have been building the code to be somewhat configurable with the intention of deploying multiple instances.
The biggest challenge so far has been generating repeat traffic. I get a good reaction when pitching directly to people hiring and when promoting the site to relevant communities/meetups but am having more trouble making that traffic sustainable.
As an Australian in tech industry that moved overseas for more opportunity, I feel like this is just the same as any other job board so far. Would be more exciting if there were more senior level jobs too
It is definitely simple the moment but that is part of the plan - to focus on the content. My hope is that being selective about the jobs being posted will lead to high quality positions (for all seniority levels).
