Techniques for optimizing Flow

If you aren't familiar with the concept of "Flow", I highly recommend reading the book Flow (also honorable mention for the book Deep Work)

Per Wikipedia: "In positive psychology, flow, also known colloquially as being in the zone, is the mental state of operation in which a person performing an activity is fully immersed in a feeling of energized focus, full involvement, and enjoyment in the process of the activity."

It's essentially the holy grail for productivity,

Per a tweet I can't find the source to: "When we disable ego, we enable learning. Learning is an innate capacity but judgment, fear, and ego get in the way. Pace and quality of learning accelerate with relaxed concentration - flow. There’s even a Japanese word called Mushin (無心). Advanced martial artists enter a Mushin state during combat. Guided by the subconscious, the sword and the warrior become one in the same."

With that being said, there is numerous techniques to help find your "Flow"

  • Essential oils
  • Sound canceling headphones
  • Curated playlists/music for focus (classical, ambient, techno, lofi beats, etc)
  • Nootropics/caffeine/tea
  • Ergonomics (chair, desk, wrist/mouse support, monitor, etc)
  • Context of location & time (outside vs coffee shop or early vs late at night)
  • Internet/app blockers
  • Pomodoro technique

If you've personally figured out how you can consistently find your Flow, I'd love to hear how.

  1. 1
    • I use chillout music without headphones (else have headache after some time) - but I have a home office.
    • Positive thinking. Listen for your fav. music for a while to energise yourself. Good mood can boost your productivity up to 31% study says. And it's really true.
    • Height-adjustable desk. I change the position when start feeling pain in back/feet. Like this one: https://zenworkpro.com/dp/B00XLRJSAW/Electric-Stand-Up-Desk.html
    • The best place for work is the office ofcourse, no coffee shops or other places. The place should be silent enough and have no other distractions (like people :) :) )
    • Pomodoro technique - definitely! Do exercises on breaks. Fresh air every 1hour.
    • No coffee, great tea and lot's of water, sometimes juice.
    • No fast food, nuts in between.
