What you think of working in something that is in the red ocean?

I'm a developer, have some years of programming and know pretty sure how to build something that works and scales. The thing is, I really can't have any good idea. I'm not looking for something revolutionary and don't have plans to be billionary, just looking for a better income flow and the possibility to work for my self.

The thing is, as I'm not having any good idea, then I thought "why not jump into the red ocean and do something cheaper and as good as the others?". The market that I'm thinking in dive is crowded but it's not the "winner take all". I don't need to be the first, second, neither the tenth, just want to be in a position that generate for me something. I really need to see something running, the time pass, I change jobs and never accomplish something that I really can say "yea, I did that and it's mine".

What you guys think? It's ok? Should I wait a little longer?

That market dive where it is crowded and NOT winner take all is only because no one has created/made a product that customers choose as the # 1..

Your PERSONAL views on the need to be # 1 in life are irrelevant to your customers needs for the BEST POSSIBLE product they can find ....its about them..NOT you .

Your job as a maker/creator is to design products that help , guide & assist users in reaching their goals whether its a game , a data tool or shopping website ….your job is to use your skills , creativity , knowledge & network connections to simply make the best product you can for your customers...That will determine whether your first , tenth or 232nd in your market .

The rest is up to you...you can find some open source ideas here that you can use for free .

It's fine to start there. At least...you know there is a market (since there are lots of competitors)!

However, as time progresses, your aim should be to develop a unique worldview that is different from your competitors*. When you do find one that resonates with your customers, then you can continue expanding in that area and build a niche product.

For instance, I recently came across this company called Animoto. They help businesses create professional videos for social media. You could argue they entered a crowded market. But their product is designed to be used by a small business owner who doesn't want / know to spend HOURS editing a video.

    Hope this is helpful!

*your unique worldview can't just be on price because then you'll be in a race to the bottom and the incumbent player can always lower their price too.

Thanks, really helped. As I don't have any clients or network to bootstrap something, starting on a proved ground may help to run and develop the first two, then, I can get the "unique" product or even a new idea.

I'm Brazilian, but just moved to Portugal about two months ago. Very good point about the culture niche, could be something that I can explore.

About the market, the application is about website monitoring (Pingdom, Statuspage, etc...). The current tools today are pretty good, but it's something that I can do fast and see it running.

I have some ideas that can be explored like intranet monitoring, open source, easy of use, simplicity, but in the end of day, will be more one monitoring tool at the internet. But like I said, don't need to be a huge success, just something that I see: "yea, people use and like it". Maybe this can give me some momentum to go after something better or more unique.

I’m finding cheaper is a trap. It limits your marketing budget. When many products are similar you have to have a better marketing strategy.

You can spend money and/or spend most of your time writing content for marketing to get organic traffic. Cheaper reduces the feasibility of spending money and the reward for writing content.

Indeed, the cheaper was in the sense of starting small with almost no cost, spending less I can change less.

I know that I'm already losing before the race as the other companies can drop the prices too and they have capital for that.
