The Economics of Running a Curated Newsletter

The Economics of Running a Curated Newsletter – Indie Hackers

I'm here to answer questions. I'd gladly edit and augment the article if you'd like to know more.

    Awesome article, thanks!

My newsletter Le Courrier du hacker https://lecourrierduhacker.com just reached 2k subscribers and I'm looking for sponsors. How did you reach yours (I'm a tech and I'm not that great in marketing)?

      A few ways.
I did do outreach a little. But just including a link to a sponsor page each week helped the most. I State the rate and more here. www.influenceweekly.co/#sponsor

When I get submissions of articles to include, I ask companies to sponsor to get the top slot, the most clicked and seen spot in the newsletter. This has worked a few times. I will always include articles submitted if they pass my editorial review. The sponsorship ends up being a benefit to them and keeps the lights on here.

Thanks, I'll follow your examples to include the link to the sponsor page inside the newsletter.

I'm also planning to contact lots of companies in the niche my newsletter targets and try to reach marketing guys. It's usually small or middle-range companies so it should be possible. I'll see how it goes.

Really interesting write up, thank you!

I've heard a few people mention LinkedIn as a good channel for things like this, but haven't seen much detail on how exactly they are using it.
Do you send people connection requests and mention your newsletter in that message, or just offer to connect and leave people to discover it by checking out your profile?

Great question. The actual way is to connect with some hand done targeting by how people identify themselves in the industry. Send an intro saying I'd like to intro them to an insightful newsletter I curate and then when they connect I send a link to sign up. I use MeetLeonard and it's been useful with the right targeting.

Note: I do get about 1 in 1,000 connect requests who don't like it at all and tell me. Usually it's people I wouldn't have wanted to connect with anyway and they tend to be on the "more awful" side of humanity. But most people are looking for a resource like my newsletter (why I started it ) and so are super nice and thankful.

        That's really useful, thank you!
