What are you working on this weekend?

Curious to hear what project's you're all working on and what aspects? ...marketing, sales UX?

  1. 31

Going to be working on my meteor showers visualization in preparation for the Perseids:

    https://www.meteorshowers.org

    1. 3

Works like charm, and the the visualization rocks! Well done, Ian.

Follow Earth function is really cool, there. What tools have you utilised to get this done? By the way, it seems curently there is no idea or posted on the weekly threads. Just seeing posts makes no sense :)

I hope to see real stuff with this bogus membership :)

    2. 2

      No love for Firefox? :(

      1. 1

I was able to load it fine :)

      2. 1

It should work now. It was actually Cloudflare Rocketloader that was killing Firefox. Thanks for letting me know!

        1. 1

          No yet...

          Console prints the following:

          VALIDATE_STATUS: false, gl error [0] bundle-20171221-1513879851.js:1:388074

Program Info Log: Number of attributes exceeds Mesa's reported max attribute count.

          I'm on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS Firefox 61.0.1

          1. 2

Works alright on mac firefox but not debian firefox. I guess I'll work on it this weekend - webgl bugs are tricky because they can depend on OS, graphics cards, etc.

    3. 1

Damn son..that was crazy..must say I was very impressed

    4. 1

      This is awesome!

    5. 1

      WOW

      This is amazing.

    6. 1

      That's really cool!

    7. 1

      Oh wow, that's awesome.

    8. 1

This is really cool! I just had a bit of fun playing around with the options 😄

    9. 1

Wow! That's a super cool visual!

Is this just for fun or do you plan on monetizing in some way?

      1. 3

        Thanks! Just for fun

You may also like this visual I've been working on: http://dinosaurpictures.org/ancient-earth

        1. 2

          Love it!

        2. 1

          Okay, that's cool.

  2. 8

Working on getting active feedback from startup communities for testing our pay per task pricing for Productized Graphic Design Service

It's currently available on this link: draftss.com/paypertask.html

  3. 7

I will be working on the selling of failory.com :)

    1. 4

Selling as in exit or building. Love your site!

      1. 1

Thanks! I want to build other projects and Failory means a lot of time. I will probably write more about this soon.

    2. 3

Ironic how failory failed. Can it write an article about itself?

      1. 2

Haha, it hasn't failed. It is just that I want to start another projects and I received a great offer.

        1. 2

Great news on the offer and it sounds like it came at a good time in terms of wanting to start other projects. Look forward to hearing about your next projects.

          1. 1

I will definitely post about them here!

  4. 5

This weekend I'm trying to finish the backend on catchit.io . It's a Instagram growth tool for people who want to grow their account organically without bots where users generally have very low engagement.

    1. 3

Just read how your platform works.

You might want to make it available for Twitter - personally, I see much better responses replying quickly to influencers on twitter because it's optimised for people seeing the responses. Especially if you use images/ videos/ gifs.

      1. 2

Yes, I feel the same, IG just came out of need for my second product nimonikku.com where I already had built it. Now I'm essentially just moving the code to a different server with a frontend. Twitter will be my immediate expansion. Most likely I'll be able to start working on that next week already.

    2. 2

I really like the concept, hope it gets worldwide 👌

      1. 1

Thank you, I just hope a few people find it as useful as I do :-)

    3. 1

I'm currently using IG for my project. I'm interested in learning more about your platform.

  5. 4

I just put together this landing page: https://www.beanstalks.xyz/ - an info product for design and engineering managers helping their teams to progress at work.

Gonna be trying to get some feedback on it and playing with airtable to see how far I can build an MVP purely on that.

    1. 1

Really like the landing page. Nice work!

  6. 4

    Mostly affinicasts.com for me.

    • Rethinking payments (is saas a good model or ala carte, maybe both?)

    • More marketing enhancements

Also building a landing page for a new course I'm building called Hello Rails

    1. 2

Chris from GoRails seems to have made a good business from charging monthly for access to his courses so I don't see why it wound't work for you.

    2. 1

Hey Andy, i really enjoyed your short courses on YouTube so I can’t wait for Hello Rails!

Hopefully this will be more in depth and implement best practices? Clean controllers etc

Let me know I’ll be first to sign up! Haha

  7. 4

Working on the marketing efforts behind launching https://sitetap.co. Site Tap is a product that lets you keep tabs on your competitors by aggregating many different kinds of content feeds into one. We also built a tool inside Site Tap that scans a competitor's website to automatically sniff out content feeds for you.

I don't mean to ramble, but this is the first time we've showed anyone and I'm testing out my messaging at the same time. The last time I launched a product on IH, HN, ProductHunt, etc., it fell flat immediately. I want this time to be different. Although, my last product honestly wasn't good enough to really find product/market fit. I have much higher hopes for Site Tap.

    1. 2

@kins that's sweet! I'm checking it out now. I'm in the same market with my side project (http://webdef.com) but just approaching things from a different perspective, though, I've thought about the idea of tracking such things as well. Love what you're doing, great job!

      1. 2

Thanks for the feedback! I'm glad you tried it out. I'm hoping it can help people and scratch an itch that they've been experiencing.

Your product is pretty cool as well. I just tested it out on a very unknown site of mine and I was surprised how much it was able to pull! Well done!

    2. 2

      Sounds interesting.

So I will get a notification each time a competitor posts marketing content?

      1. 2

Not currently, but that is our goal for it! I'm working on gauging overall interest and your feedback is the first step towards validating that effort. My goal is to notify you when any of the feeds you track gets updated. This could be Twitter feeds, Shopify collections, WooCommerce stores, etc. It's something I really wanted recently when starting on a different project but I couldn't find something that pulled it all together and did discovery. We ended up building it ourselves for internal use and thought others might enjoy it too. I plan on adding email notifications for updated sources very soon but, as you can imagine, this is very expensive resource-wise so I wanted to make sure it was something people actually wanted.

        1. 2

I'm interested! I'd love that feature. I signed up for an account so please shoot out an update as you add more features and make the existing features a bit more solid. I'd pay for it :)

          1. 2

Thanks! I will definitely keep those with accounts updated and plan on releasing discussions here as well. I appreciate the support!

        2. 2

I think it makes sense. Reminds me of a conversation I had a some months back. We were talking about having a platform that pulls in competitor ad's on facebook so we could see what types of products/ offers they were pushing on Facebook. I think an Indie Hacker launched a similar solution shortly after the conversation.

          1. 2

I think I know what product you're referencing (although I think I might have seen it on ProductHunt) and I think that would be valuable as well.

    3. 1

      Hosted where?

      1. 2

If you're asking who our infrastructure provider is, we use DigitalOcean for hosting and AWS for certain other operations.

  8. 4

Continuing to learn ARKit - it's slow going, but so excited about the possibilities :)

    1. 3

I work at bluevisionlabs.com - they're doing some fun things with ARKit!

    2. 2

Stick with it. I've seen some awesome demos on Twitter. You'll be making amazing things in no time.

      1. 1

Thank you! Am looking forward to it.

  9. 4

    https://getwelcomehome.app/

Tweaking this puppy and getting the phone app tested and prepped for launch.

  10. 3

I'm going to be working on fixing a ton of bugs and annoyances for My "Goodreads for Videos Games" app.

Hopefully I'll also be able to get to adding likes/comments. Or at least starting them.

    1. 2

      Awesome UI on this.

      1. 1

Thanks! I tried really hard to make it nice :D

  11. 3

I'm going to work on improving the job posting experience on https://remoteonly.io

    1. 2

      Pick your Price
Whatever amount the listing is worth to you (minimum $69). In US dolalrs.

      dolalrs

      1. 1

Whoops! Thanks for pointing that out!

    2. 1

All those job postings, are they actual customers or jobs you've added?

      1. 1

The site started as a manually-curated aggregator so all the posts that you see were aggregated. I only added the job posting functionality a couple of days ago.

  12. 3

Adding new features (that are on the MVP plan, of course) for a new platform I'll be launching at the end of August 🤞

The platform will allow you to connect your database to it and generate beautiful charts from your own data. You can see a quick pre-production sneak peak here: https://twitter.com/razvanilin/status/1023220404998078464

I might release it just for a few people in the beginning so if you're interested in trying it out send me a DM on twitter and I'll get back to you when the platform is ready for testing ✌️

  13. 3

Built and launched my productized conversion-consulting website last weekend with $0 cost to me.

Did a Free service giveaway on Reddit.

Got more requests than I could handle.

After that, got few paid customers.

Currently focusing on distributing time and effort on marketing of this website without throwing money on FB ads/adwords.

    Here is the website: https://conversion-sherpa.herokuapp.com

    Simple yet functional website.

The catch is: Super value being provided at affordable price to small businesses/early-stage startups.

    1. 1

Oh - so you are doing manual reviews?

Are you planning to automate these reviews at some point?

      1. 1

Yup, partially(repeated mistakes, common pitfalls, template solutions), I don't think full automation is possible for the service I provide and that's something I like about this.

        1. 1

Make sense. Maybe launching a cheap ebook listing what to look for and great examples - then premium consulting might be a good mix.

You could scale off the ebook then, take on paying clients that are willing to pay a premium.

    2. 1

Could you share info about what heroku tier are you running on and how many requests killed it?

I'm wondering which tier can handle initial peaks (like showing it to HN community).

      1. 1

Free-tier(as I mentioned the cost of website has been $0 to me)

No problem until now as the traffic size has been humble upto now.

Note: I have free credits with AWS and Digital Ocean to use when I need to use upgraded hosting.

  14. 2

I checked out some books from a local library to recharge and learn new ideas.

  15. 2

Just delivered a new feature to https://statuspal.io :) very requested, custom domains with SSL support for your status page.

Also wrote a blog post and send an email to existing customers, somehow I procrastinated the most in this kind of tasks ^^

    https://medium.com/statuspal/custom-ssl-domains-arrive-to-statuspal-4b987bbdd674

    1. 2

May I ask how hard is it to incorporate custom domains w/ SSL? It seems like something I'd want in a future app but Im unsure how much work it entails?

      1. 2

Well it wasn't trivial, but also not as hard as I imagined once I figured out how to do it properly, took me roughly a week, I think I might write a blog post on how I did it for Statuspal.

        1. 1

I'd be very interested in that. Following you on medium :)

  16. 2

I'm working on converting my written courses on Vue Hero to video courses. Here is the first part I created https://vuehero.com/courses/getting-started-with-vuejs/part-one/

It's exciting and a little bit scary too :P Never done anything like this before, so it feels a little bit weird to sit and talk to my computer and make videoes from it.

Will also start the work of being able track your process as you go through a course.

    1. 1

This is an awesome start Stein. Congrats.

I really like video courses for learning to code. I have I got started with Rails in Jan and have been working on ideas/ learning almost daily since. As of this morning I have just started Wes Bos' React for beginners.

If I may - from the perspective of someone who's bought multiple courses - I really appricate it when the instructor puts effort into making the end result either look really cool or seem like it's getting you to a goal beyond a specific challenge.

Personally, when I hit difficult points it's much easier to keep going if I am building something that I know will look great when I share it or if I feel like it's getting me closer to my end goal of launching a product. To the extent that I spent several weeks looking for courses that would teach me how to make products I like.

Here are a couple of examples...

      https://gorails.com/episodes/rails-vuejs-trello-clone-part-1

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ZTT9kw3PIE&t=4430s

Best of luck with your project. Let me know how it goes.

      1. 1

Hi and thanks for the good tips!

I understand what you mean and I will definitely look into this. Adding a little video at the beginning of the course to show what we are building (and actually make it great) is a good idea!

Thanks for the examples too, will look into them :)

  17. 2

Squashing a few minor bugs while I procrastinate on trying to write landing page copy for http://www.gidoca.com

It's a manufacturing planning system for makers.

  18. 2

Going to be working on my landing page copy, not happy about it yet at all.

Trying to come up with a plan to validate another idea that I have and see its feasibility.

  19. 2

Preparing ourself to launch https://curv.io/ on Monday after more then 1,5 years of development! :)

  20. 2

Launched and will be adding some basic features to my new little web app: https://www.whoisright.app

A little project I made last weekend when my wife and I got into one of our many light-hearted debates. Sometimes, we can't agree so we ask our friends. Sometimes, we like to hear other people's opinions on our thoughts.

    1. 2

      A hotdog is a sandwich.

      1. 1

I hope you voted for side A!

  21. 2

Hi, I'm currently working on Cron and website monitoring:

    http://statusfork.com/

  22. 2

Working on improvements to Pushup Hero - https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/pushup-hero/id1410662331

I want to add a daily pushup goal.

  23. 2

Growth for intake360.com. Finally was able to get developers to help me work out some kinks. There's still some other items I want to address but I might as well just launch.

  24. 2

A way to dynamically display checkout with order summary such as subscription price, discount and total amount with stripe and laravel

    1. 1

Is this for an app you've built already?

  25. 2

Working on my side project, specifically, working on the reverse index so I can provide better info for people.

    http://webdef.com

    Research Companies.

Find the technologies used on a any company website, how much money they spend each month, and a list of their emails.

    1. 3

Wow had no idea how many services some sites employ. I'm not your target audience but its quite interesting to browse through those marketing software stacks. Good work.

      1. 1

        Thanks!

    2. 2

What does the - how much they spend - indicate? Paid Ads?

      1. 1

No, not paid ads. It's website spend data. You can find out how much websites are spending each month on web technologies.

  26. 2

Working on integrating logins and payments to bring my website auditor Chrome extension (https://www.checkbot.io/) out of beta. 😄

    1. 2

Love the website ✌️ I might give it a try soon

    2. 2

Sounds like a big step forward!

One of my mates was saying I should start investing is SEO soon. Your platform might come in useful.

Looks like you've been doing a great job of getting traffic to it. 12,000 users and 160+ 5 star reviews is really impressive.

      1. 2

Thanks. 😄Let me know if you want any on-page SEO tips. I ran Checkbot quickly over your site and it found a few worthwhile suggestions that shouldn't take long to fix e.g. duplicate titles, missing descriptions, missing image ALT tags.

        1. 1

Yeh happy to hear what you'd advise. I installed your plugin and saw that I have a ton of work to do.

I've not done any SEO work for years, but I think content & SEO make sense for this project because I should be getting backlinks from users from across the web.

  27. 2

Wrapping up https://www.datagekko.com for its open beta, doing some final testing to make sure everything is smooth and so. Other than that preparing my list of initial contacts and places and strategies to spread the word.

  28. 2
    1. Most weekend I'm working on new growth hacking and social media sales funnel for new real estate client.

    2. Testing new growth tools for http://mattsgrowthtools.com/ :)

    1. 1

Sounds fun - what's your favourite channel at the moment?

      1. 1

You mean favourite channel to get more customers for my clients? ;)

        1. 1

Yeh - always interested in learning about good / profitable channels.

          1. 2

In my opinion FB Ads it's an easy way to growth fast for most business right now. Problem is, people using it in a very basic way, so the results isn't very good.

If you use users data from FB right it will be huge. Add a nice sales funnel and you'll be suprised. ;)

            1. 1

I've run a few FB campaigns in the past. I agree, it can be really effective if you have a good margin for CPA.

  29. 2

  30. 2

As much as I want to continue our sales and marketing efforts, I have to work on the robustness of the app @ Ambissues, thus we have to solve some bugs as we approach our public release.

Moreover, we want to further optimise the Machine Learning algorithms and maybe try another alternative for sentiment analysis.

Stack: Rails, Python, Postgres, Mongo, Elastic

    1. 2

      Hey Dimitris,

Looks like a really cool solution.

I've just started to email my users to start getting feedback. I'll take a closer look at your platform over the weekend to see if it make sense for my current setup.

Have you been sending traffic to your site already?

      1. 2

Thanks for the kind words Peter! We currently have 5 private beta users and we are in the process of sending more invitations to people (companies/startups mostly) who requested early access to Ambissues.

Please let me know if you are interested in learning more, or you have an idea of what would be valuable for such a platform :)

6 months ago I started on an app called Vertol. It's to make maintaining/updating your sites' images easier. I originally wrote it to learn Elm, since I got a job as an Elm dev with no experience in Elm. I've learned a lot since then, so I'm re-architecting and completely rewriting it to make it better. Got almost all the pages wired together. Just gotta flesh out the api and views.

    Hi! Good initiative!

I'm working on creating social pages for my new side project independant.io which I just released online.

Started with twitter and FB, trying to build a little audience before building more content. Pretty boring stuff if you ask!

Sitting down and forcing myself to finally get to some annoying things I've been putting off for https://ceev.io for way too long.

A lot of marketing prep, some blogs, stuff like that... I just get so bored with it. What are some tools you guys use to help with marketing or content (promotional graphics, blogs, etc)?

  42. 1

    writting content

    negotiating backlinks

    getting social signals

    Hoping to rank soon

Scheduling phone calls with our target market to better understand their pain points and how we can solve their problems and improve our product

  49. 1

I will try to find an angle for DoByLearning.com ... because my mind is usually all over the place and I struggle to find a comprehensible approach to content generation ... and overall strategy for that matter.

A current idea that I want to ponder is turning a Braindump into a Do By Learning book and creating the website around the ideas of that book. An outline that I hacked together quickly looks like this:

Part 1 - The Age of Makers
Chapter 1 - Bad Times for Craftsmen
Chapter 2 - Where we Miss The Mark
Chapter 3 - The Tragedy of Ideas in Isolation
    Chapter 4 - Creating a Better Tomorrow
    Chapter 5 - 12 Rules for a Maker Life
    Part 2 - Hack Wisdom
Chapter 6 - Proactivity, Leadership and Management
Chapter 7 - Your Golden Goose - From Urgent to Important
Chapter 8 - Utilizing Interdependence and Synergy
Chapter 9 - A Look at Conventional Wisdom
Chapter 10 - Monetize the Learning Experience
Part 3 - Embrace Higher Standards
Chapter 11 - Dreaming Big - Ideals as Benchmarks
Chapter 12 - A Better Map for the Maker World
Chapter 13 - Skill Acquisition and The Grind
Chapter 14 - A Strong Foundation for Passive Income
Chapter 15 - Form the Habits You Need
    Part 4 - Become Remarkable
Chapter 16 - Value and Meaning
    Chapter 17 - A Holistic Resilience Workout
    Chapter 18 - Cross-Reference What You Read
    Chapter 19 - Build a Mental Model
Chapter 20 - Bringing it all Together
    Appendix A - Technical Details
    Seamless Applications
    Computer Aided Procedural Engineering
Appendix B - Leadership and Management
    Politics
    Economics
    Open Source
    Privacy
    Feminism
    Appendix C - Fermi Guesstimations

Building an MVP for a minimal, distraction free blogging platform. It's the first thing that I'm building that I think I can clearly charge for (if there's demand), and my goal is to test it as quickly as possible.

    1. 2

I suspect there will be a demand for this.

I've been using a locally hosted Wordpress with no plugins and the most stripped back theme I could build at the time as a journal. It's been good for getting thought out of my brain but it's not as clean as I would like.

Something closer to Hemingway or Notion might be nicer as a UI to interact with.

      1. 1

Thanks a lot for the encouragement! I have been blogging for a while and also always look for the most minimal themes. I've been doing research another players in the space, and it seems like there are a few great minimal word processors, but no minimal blogging interface.

This isn't my first project that (i previously launched Hackterms with some success, but it is the first thing I'm building that has a clear business model.

        My goals are:

        • learn from my past projects to launch a true MVP and get feedback as quickly as possible

        • if there's demand for the product, charge

    1. Rebuilding the visual editor for iDIOPAGE so that it's more easily extensible.

    2. Collecting a load more leads to start sending out more cold outreach campaigns on Monday.

    1. 1

This is a really cool idea!

Have you given any thought to Browser Blockers stopping your JS snippet from loading and working? For example, I'm using Privacy Badger and it reports 11 trackers on your site with a majority blocked. I'd assume that this would cut into the effectiveness of your product for your customers?

      1. 2

It's something I need to look into more actually. Tools like that wouldn't render iDIOPAGE useless, I think most of the functionality should work in spite of most blockers, but they might affect things like conversion rate tracking.

Ultimately, if people don't want to be tracked in any way then I want to respect that. I need to look more into the technical details though, thanks for pointing it out.

I think I saw you post this a couple of months back. It allows you to personalise pages to people who land on them, right? really cool.

What do you use to send your Outreach emails? are you sending them in bulk?

A mate and I have access to email addresses but need to figure out how to get past the spam box.

      1. 1

I actually cold emailed you to try the beta :). The product's changed a bit since then, but it's essentially still about personalising pages yes.

I'm using Mailshake, scheduling emails in small batches after each lead collection session (only about 10 people at a time right now). I'm happy enough with it, although the UI is confusing at times and it's missing a few useful features like scheduling for different timezones (you can work around by separating your campaigns by timezone I guess).

It also warns you about which email addresses are likely to bounce or hurt your deliverability so it sounds like it could be a good fit for you. They review your campaign for free when you sign up as well which was useful for me at least.

        1. 1

That's right, I did get an email from you.

Milkshake sounds interesting. I'll have a closer look over the weekend.

          Cheers
